I'm new to this
forum, I have just discovered the site after looking for results from my search on Ford
Explorers. The purpose for my writing is that I want some confidence re instilled into me regarding my car. I own a 1998 Ford Explorer limited and have done for 5 years now. my problem is that it appears to be suffering from either bad luck or is what I don't want to believe, but a lemon. It had the automatic transmission re-built just over 2 years ago, (partly covered by warranty), then I had to have it re-built again (this time at my expence) in January this year, and also an additional solonoid replaced (further expence) in July this year.
I have just had the air-conditioner switch and heater controls replaced in the last month, (very costly as the entire dash etc had to be removed and replaced).
To top off my dilemma, my fan belt tensioner broke a main bolt and had to be replaced. Apart from these problems there have been four more minor ones that I havn't worried about greatly as they were only $100 to $400 each time and only had the car away from me for a day or so.
The first gear box re-build was (6 weeks without car and $6800). The second gearbox rebuild was (just over 1 week without car and $2700). The air-conditioner problem was (2 weeks without car and $2000). The belt tensioner was (3 days without car and $650).
Does anyone mechanicaly minded feel that this is the end of my bad luck and that I should have better luck with my car from now on. This is a serious request as both myself and my wife like the car and would like to know that we can have some happy motoring ahead of us for a while. I was hoping to keep this car for a few years at least and would appreciate any help or suggestions.
Thankyou in advance.

Gday Melvin,
I am a qualified mechanic and i have only ever heard of poor reports of the explorer ( we call them exploders ) . But im sure they all cant be that bad.
So come on all you explorer owners give melvin some piece of mind.
Regards
Steve

thanks steve.
I'm trying to come to grips with my problems and that is the reason I was prompted in the first place to post my question. With the responses i have had from you all, I am starting to regain my composure and will battle on with my car. I must admit i do like driving it, i am now thinking possitive that the devil is behind me and there are only blue skies ahead.
Regards
Melvin

The exploder taunts were to do with the tyres they fitted on the early models.(now fixed) Talk to Baz(nsw). He seems happy with his. Sounds like u may have been unlucky.

Thanks brewman.
Ford replaced my tyres a couple of years ago, my problems seem more mechanical. As I have just said to Steve, I'm hoping all the bad problems are behind me.

Sorry to hear of all this bad Luck on your Explorer. My brother had a 1999 model bought new. After 1 transmission re-build under warranty and a burnt-out alternator his expense and a few engine problems......he sold it and for a lot less than he paid for it. He vowed never to look at one again. He got a GU patrol 4.2L diesel in 2001 and hasn't had a problem yet (touch wood)
I can only hope for you that nothing more will go wrong.
All the best
Vince

That is the reason i don't want to get rid of her yet as i have spent so much on her, I'm hoping to now get some value Kms. If I trade her in I may be giving someone else a lear run, hence my reason for wanting to gain some confidence, which may i add you have all started giving me.

Melvin,
My cousin bought an Exploder about the same time I bought my Jackaroo in 1998. I ribbed him quite abit about it and he too went thru quite a few problems but they have settled down recently.
He had problems with ABS sensors and windscreen leaks amongst other things but like most cars, you seem to go thru a spurt of problems then things run
well for awhile.
4WDs are a luxury item that will cost more money to maintain than a simpler 2WD. However, for that extra expense (and inconvenience) you get the flexibility to get away from the masses when it suits you.
You've passed thru a period of high maintenance and hopefully you'll get respite so you can use the vehicle for what it was intended.

Thanks Andrew.
You have given me the most optimistic outlook that I could have had and inspired me to feel that I am doing the right thing hanging on to her. I hope your cousin is still getting a great run and i wish him and yourself many happy years of motoring. Once again thankyou to yourself and all of you.

Was considering an Explorer but glad I didn't, after doing some research
and having had a look at some.
I do feel sorry for the bad run that you have had with
the exploder. It all soon adds up and you really have to wonder if
it will really get any better! The beast is telling you something....
SELL IT NOW and get a,...
well I'm bias, get a Jackaroo! (-;

Sorry , cant help your confidence in them .
I looked at buying one (98/99 model) about 12mths ago. Took one drive and walked away . . . Garbage.
I do know of one guy that has bought one of the newer ones (2003 from memory) and he loves it. Its a HUGE improvement on the earlier ones. Tows really
well. Lots of space.
Uses lots of fuel , and ordinary offroad, but he bought it more to tow his Caravan anyway.

Well, hi Melvin our Explorer (99 manual) has served us
well never let us down we have had problems too but all cars do, look through this
forum and it's not the only 4x4 with probs, Nissan 3.0ltr patrol, LandCruiser front diff and
suspension, just to name two there are 4 explorer owners on this
forum Trevor who has just come back from the Cape, had a good trip no probs with his Explorer said it went
well never missed a beat, The undertaker his Explorer 180,000ks never had a major prob or as he says never had a spanner touched on it in anger, it seems you have had a bad run but maybe or hopefully it' has settled now and you can enjoy the car for what is a great car to drive comftible heaps of power plenty of room and bloody great in sand, i'm assuming you don't do much off roadas you haven't mentioned it, they are good off road despite what the knockers say independent front suspention is it's only downfall off road with all IFS vehicles it has it's limitations i've had a couple of probs off road but i put it down to my poor driving at the times, anyway where abouts are you Melvin if your in NSW come to the
Hill End get-together on the Oct long weekend we can talk about your car, don't know if i can help but i can try if all else fails meeting new people with something in common and having a beer could be a good thing can't hurt, also Melvin take a look at this site it's a Ford Explorer
forum there are 29,000 members have gotten a few tips from this place and there are other Aussie Explorer owners there too.

A couple of nice GQ's next to the Explorer Baz, i bet ya there a coupla good blokes that drive em, cough, cough. I see 1 pic of the Explorer up the top of Mt Coree, its a tough little climb at the end, but worth it for the view.

Yes i am from NSW from
Sydney actually. You have given my pride and heart a great boost. I was at the lowest i have felt in ages with her in the last couple of weeks when i was again having problems. As you say all cars have problems and i suppose some more than others maybe now with a renewed possitive outlook I can get some trouble free years ahead of me. I do love driving the car, who knows maybe now she'll even start returning the favour and leave my bank balance alone. I'll send an email to you personally in the near future.
