Just wondering if any of you Explorozes have any hints or tips on making your own draw systems for the back.Maybe you even have plans or where you can buy the sliders, materials stuff like that. The Minister For Finances and I are planning on doing a bit of travelling shortly and I would like to have plenty of storage for the trip.I own a old but very reliable 84 Hilux Dual cab.
I hope to get some good feedback off you good folks.
Many Regards.
Daryl.

The only advice I would give is do not use MDF nailed or screwed together as so many people seem to want to do. In an accident or even an emergency stop the whole thing could collapse. MDF is only thick cardboard. If it was structurally OK then it would be used by all draw manufacturers to make draw kits. People like Black widow use pressed sheet steel as their main frame.
I made my own rack using 20 x 20 MS RHS and angle welded into a frame braced with 12 mm plywood. The shelves and all sides were lined with marine ply to take four Plastic storage boxes. The only slide I had was a Black Widow fridge slide. It also has cupboards for spares and
tools and a open section under to fit in long things like chairs, table, stove etc. I priced using ball bearing slides and by the time I had finished it would be not much cheaper than a Black Widow system plus I would lose a lot of space in allowing for the width of the slides. These are OK if you have pressed metal sides as used by draw manufacturers.
All up system cost about $800 plus. That allowing for everything I used.
If I was to do it again I might consider using aluminium tubing to save weight. Better still save up for a professionally made system and the best I have seen is one called "Tanami" who I think come from Vic or SA.
I have CAD drawing but unless you have a CAD program its a waste of time emailing to you. If you want a photo and you are a member email me through ExplorOz.

I was in the throes of making my own when I lucked into a set of those Red Desert drawers (about $300 a set). I was goijng to use a product called Qubelock, which is extruded aluminium tubing with all the necessary "doo dads" to join it all up. This would be the frame, and use use ply to cover it.
This may be of use to you. It was to me as I can't weld or fabricate metal.
This is the link to the website.

Another good idea but I was glad to get but how does it go if you are trying to keep the weight factor to a minimum as the Hilux is only a 2.4 and needs every little bit of help to get up those bigger hills.
But thanks.

Do a search on specific and related topics in the search engine at the top of the
forum page.
eg. Put this number in "quick search " - 10796 - and it will take you to similar discussions.
There's heaps of stories in the archives.

Forget the sliders. Go to you local plastics place and get strips of nylon 25 x 5 mm that can be couter sunk screwed to the frame you make up. Works a treat and costs $30 for 4 strips for 2 draws. Get 2nd hand sq tube (20mm) welded together and topped by marine ply. Get the draws made at a sheet metal place (the most expensive bit) or buy ready made draws but these may not go as deep or as long as you want. Anchored in place by some turn buckles attached to the catchment bolts the dickie seats came from and viola you have a draw system costing about $300.

Hi deb n daz
I have made a module for our Rodeo dualcab- which would be similar to your needs. Do you have a fridge?? What do you need to carry for the trip??
I looked at all the proprietory ones around and they didn't quite suit our needs, so we built our own. Room for Engel 40- 40lites
water- large plastic box for cooking/
camping needs- tucker box- draw for cutlery & light stuff- compartment for gas bottles- compartment for spares incl oils/hoses etc. It has even has positive comments from other campers.
Where are ya located?? If near by (SW
Sydney) drop in..or give me your email address and I will take some pics and forward to you.

Hi agqain:
I just remembered - there is a Chuck Wagon setup for sale in the Trader section of this site, under
Camping Gear. It is from a Landcruiser (I think), and not sure if it could be made to fit, but they are a good unit.
Best idea is to get some dimensions and contact the guy selling it to get his Chuck Wagon dimensions. Could be a possibility.
