Gidday all, I have a 4.5ltr 100 series land cruiser and had gas fitted after warranty of course, I have constantly got 7.8 to 8KL/Ltr or 12.8lt/100klm, danm confusing, using ULP on open road driving, after having gas fitted retaining my original tanks, I found after a bit of buggering around with the fitter, my consumption on LPG settled at about 4.8kl/tr or about 21ltr/100klm. I suppose running this beast for about $7-8 per 100klm with gas at .40cpl is not bad but the ratio of ULP/LPG does not seem to be right, if you have any figures you might be getting let me know, I am thinking of putting it on a dyno to have it tweaked but if the 4.8 sounds right I won't bother as it is very expensive, let me know I would appreciate and input, regards Barry. I don't know about anyone else but that doesn't seem right too me, 12 on petrol & 21 on gas defeats the purpose of going too gas, from memory with my Ford LTD it was about the same consumsion gas/petrol only a bit higher on gas but not double, i would be inclined to have that checked.

A mate of
mine with a rangie uses double gas as unleaded. But with pricing the way it is, double has means your still only paying about 60 cents as opposed to $0.95-$1.05 for the same k's.
Well, $0.32 is what gas is in brissy at the moment anyway.
But when the gas gets up a bit, hard to justify shelling out 2k for gas equip.

Lpg is about the 40c to 45 mark in
Sydney depending what suburb you go too. Out in the bush it's dearer again, so if your towing and on gas you would use more again due to less power and your engine working harder, my thought would be long range
tank but then thats just my opinion.

My old 80 series {with an old empco gas sytem} gave 4-5 kms per ltr on petrol and 3-4 kms per ltr on gas. With the new lpg systems out today 4-5 kms ltr is about right.
The great thing about lpg is that when your coolant system fails the lpg convertor freezes solid stopping your motor, before you have a chance of detroying it from lack of coolant.
Tuning is rather simple and you wont need it dyno'ed the main jet is located normally in the supply line betwwen convertor and the mixture and is adjusted by a 6 inch shifter.Just retard the valve by 1 degree appox to the car top speed drops to an exceptable amount{ appox 110) towing a about 1tone trailer.or about 130kms empty. Idle is done at the mixture and normal is small screw. Loosen the screw will close the bypass {reduce the idle} and screw in to increase it.The system is so simple I used to back the main valve off for normal driving and conserve fuel ,but when it came to tow a heavy load in less than 2 minutes increase the horsepower back up again.
I also found that every 20,000 kms I had to strip the mixer completely and clean it. With the old empco system I could do that in about 2 hrs including a tune up as
well.

I have a sahara with a 3F and I get 13l per 100k on ULP and 20l per 100k on gas. If I had known at the time I would have specified the impco system as no one up here will touch the cheapie.

fit a dual map unichip, so you can run optimum tuning for lpg, and petrol, and you will get performance and lt per 100km improvement.
The 4.5 goes to around 14.5-15lt per 100km with a unichip fitted, and tuned, which doesnt take long to pay for itself if you do km over the life of the car.

I have a 4.5lt in a 75 series. I get 5.6ks per litre on petrol and 4.6ks per litre on gas. Had the 110lt gas
tank twicked a bit so I have a usable 100ltrs of gas.

The use of LPG is really a bit of a con job. Generally speaking, the mileage you get on LPG is about a 3rd less than straight petrol. This is simply a matter of molecular weight and energy obtained from two vastly different hydrocarbon compounds. There is nowhere near the same amount of thermal energy (read power) in LPG when compared to petrol on a lvolume for volume basis. You will always use more LPG than petrol over a given distance at the same speed and vehicle weight. If you could get your motor to accept huge amounts of LPG then you would get equal power - but then it would have to designed to run on LPG and probably wouldn't run on petrol.
Work out the maths guys - LPG ain't worth it now, and if the "guvment" ever increase the excise on LPG as they plan to do, then it's a "no brainer".
The only advantage with LPG is that it's a cleaner burning fuel - less pollution and engine wear. But it takes a long time to justify the cost.

Barry, I only wish I could get 12.8 l per 100 out of my 4.5 100 series.
21 sounds about the mark for gas, (I only get around the 16l per100 from
mine) and when researching gas found that around 20 was the norm.
I didnt go ahead because of the small distances I do, but with the price of gas the way it is at present, (and in conjunction with an unichip as GO OFFROAD sugggested) you could comfortably run a big petrol 4wd much cheaper than a smaller diesel 4by.
