Hi , new to all this. I currently have a patrol 4.2l td towing a 25" van which is home.Apart fom stress going through hills, changing gears etc I am very happy with it. A friend, due to health reasons, towing a similiar van, weight about 3 t, with a 92 landcruiser manual, needs to change to an automatic 4wd. He is looking at a 4800 02 around the $43k mark. Can anyone give advice to these vehicles, problems, fuel consumption etc
thanks
tommy

should be a wicked tow vehicle with all that power, havnt heard of any specific problems and there shouldnt be to many as they are just a big lazy 6 not a 3l getting pushed to the max with high turbo boost. Ensure it is set up for towing with auxillery trans cooler if they are still required these days. Nothing kills an auto quicker than overheating them due to towing and modern autos make George w Bushes war on terror look cheap compared to a rebuild. Every thing I have read suggests you might need to also invade an impovrished oil rich nation to keep the fuel up to them when towing (25+ l per 100k) and upwards depending on power needed but thats only what I have heard

I have got a 4.8 manual. Last July we did a trip from Melbourne to Nelson Bay towing a 22' van. Went up the Hume thru Sydney and set it on cruise control at 100kph all the way up the Hume. Towing power was fantastic, (compared to the 4.2 gq i had previously) just sat on 100 no matter what. Fuel usage was 20.4 lt per 100kms for the towing part of the trip. Didnt keep figures on the general driving once we got there.

Dont know of any problems as yet with the 4.8. Only had it about 6 months or so. Havent had a problem apart from the centre console lid losing colour but was fixed under warranty

Thanks for that. An automatic probably would be heavier. Wonder if a "
HICLONE" would make a difference?

3 weeks ago the Patrol petrols were up around 35-40L/100km towing through the desert around Telfer. Diesels were in low 20s. Lot better once on the hwy - petrols back to 20s and diesels around 15-17. The petrols had heaps of grunt but there is only one to get it and that is with an exchange of fuel. rgds
Slow down and relax......

Only a typo I know. But I would have thought you wouldn't notice a 2' 1" van on the back ... except when you tripped over it.

............;-))

Cheers
