We're headed up to Wollondilly River for a bit of R & R in January and would like to get suggestions from our fellow forumites with regard to things to see and do within the general vicinity. Sitting by the river demolishing a bottle of Durif or Petit Verdot sounds good to me, but might get boring after day three. I know the campertrailer group stayed there earlier this year (Did you go Baz?) but there seems to be little information available about the surrounding countryside. We've never camped this far north in NSW before so really are totally ignorant.

Wollondilly RS , have a website. I'll try and locate the link.

Wombeyan Caves is about 30 mins away. Worth a looksee.

You can do a drive up into Limeburners, Dingo Dell , and Yerrandarie.

Check out the trek notes on the Website here

Thanks Flappan. I've spent time perusing the web site but the "Things to do" section is under construction. As I said I'm totally ignorant so at the risk of looking like a fool (again) what are Limeburners, Dingo Dell and Yerrandarie. We thought we'd show the munchkin the ruins at Adelong Falls and Yarrangobilly Caves on the way up.

From Yarrangobilly caves go up Long Plain to Blue Water Holes, you pass the T/O at Rules Point. Then from Cooma take the back road to Braidwood and vist the Big Hole, not a bad camp site either, Keep going through Braidwood past Lake Bathurst to Tarago and hit the Hume again.

Otherwise from Cooma go up through Canberra.

http://www.exploroz.com.au/TrekNotes/Syd/Yerranderie.asp

The best way to describe it is to have a look at the trek notes for Yerranderie on the ExplorOz website (link above).

Yerranderia is an old Mining town. Dingo Dell is a camp area in the National Park. Limeburners is a creek ? and a camping area.

Kanungra Walls (sp) is a GREAT view of the Blue Mountains from the South.

Well we'll have to let you know what you've been missing when we get back Baz. For some reason I was under the impression that you were going on one of campertrailer outings to there (maybe it was to Tumut).

can always go to river island nature retreat if you feel like getting your cloths off for the summer break. River island is a clothes optional resort.
If you like that sort of thing

My two girls look great in the buff pmacks but not I. But then again it could be a way to get the tourist numbers down. Maybe Truckster should start going starkers at the places he wants to visit but doesn't because of the "overcrowding" factor.

In the winter months trout run up out of Warragamba Dam to spawn in this river, but below the road crossing mainly .Some of the smaller fish stay up in the river during the summer and anyway ,if your going to go through the Snowy Mtns , you should bring a spin rod and reel and a few small spinners .
Even if you catch nothing , it will be very relaxing .

Thanks for the suggestion Willie but I'm one of those strange creatures for whom the lure of fishing does not appeal . . . but I agree that there's not much that beats sitting by a river doing nothing.

We camped at the river crossing campsite in July when the temp was minus 4 degrees at night, had the big fire, but firewood is in short supply. I remember camping there about 20 odd years ago in summer & it was hot & there was lots of blowies.

The huts that are marked on the park map/brochure are all worth a visit. There is a varied amount of 4 wheeling in the park, quite steep climbs, definitely interesting when wet or towing a heavy camper.
A few nice creeks and you can walk anywhere, but easiest to follow the creek lines as it is pretty rugged in spots.
If you want to swim then 'The Beach' is the go, Silent Creek is best for larger groups.

Ay Wombat,

It's very hot and dry there, not much firewood around so you should collect what you can find along the road in. Probably be fire restrictions at that time of year anyway. If you have a canoe, lilo or tire tubes they would be ok. River has been very low for quite a while but good swimming anyway. It's dog friendly, roos and wild goats around, though the goats stay a fair way away. Remember the snakes if you take your dog.

As said above, Wombeyan caves is a good thing to do, you can camp there too (Nat'l park). Limeburnere and Dingo Dell are nice but a fair drive (close to an hour for the 20 odd k's just to the caves).

There is a track to the left from a gully about 1k towards the caves from WRS, climbs right up the hill. Haven't been up there, looks like a fun bitta 4wding. The map suggests that there is a road runs along the ridgeline above the river from near the caves.

Few other roads on the map that can't be accessed. You might be able to get to Joadja through the nudie camp.

. . . "close to an hour for the 20 odd k's just to the caves" even my rudimentary mathematis equates that to be 20kmh and that sounds like my kind of holiday. "Moments in time rather than just minutes in a day." thanks for the great suggestions Jim. We thought we would base ourselves at Wollondilly River Station and take day trips from there.
