I driva a Nissan GU with a TD42TI diesel
I have read a previous post and also a 4X4 magazine article about dirty diesel and upgrading the fuel filter.
Is it necessary to upgrade filter?
Can anyone suggest an upgrade fuel filter with a glass bowl to replace the standard one?

Rosco,
Hav a look at the C.A.V system which is available from most good 4wd outlets.
Yes it is a glass bowl system and the replacement filters are priced from $5 to $15 depending where you buy them. I have installed this system in my 4.2 td Gu and have been very glad I have. You can see how your fuel is just by looking at the glass bowl. It does not stop you getting crook fuel but at least when the filter starts to get dirty or the bowl looks bad then you can either dump the fuel or keep changing filters at greatly reduced cost. And they are simple to replace.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

A good one is called a 'Denco Diesel Adaptor'. Allows you to use the (cheap but good) CAV elements previously mentioned with the benefit of a glass bowl. Available from most diesel injection places and ARB outlets. Price $95 -$110 retail. Will probably pay for itself with a few filter changes and you can now afford to change the fuel filter every time you change the oil. A good investment I reckon.

As MArk says, sus out the Denco system. I have one fitted to my car, and in a week, I can see why people change to them. Glass bowl, you can see the chit in the bottom, and cheaper filters. WIN WIN situation!

There was a post on a deal from Denco on these recently, probably 5 or so pages back now, worth checking it out.

Im going to flush my fuel tank out next weekend... Job # 12914820 thats waiting.. :(

You can not filter diesel TOO well.
Tolerances in pumps and injectors are miniscule.. I use a toilet roll type filter on the fuel (Frantz) up stream of the original and the crud it gets has to be seen to be believed.

Factory filter then lasts pretty well forever- though I change it very occasionally to avoid it getting too old...

An Uncle of mine has used a Frantz filter for fuel on his bulldozers for over 30 years...I'm convinced. There's a local agent you can find out more info from frantz_aust@dodo.com.au.

Cheers...
