Looks like I'm looking to buy a Patrol, and I've only got $20k to spend.
I will need to tow a caravan with it (about 18ft).
GU, GQ, ST, Ti, ... can someone please give me a guide to understanding what the letters mean when it comes to Nissan Patrol's.
If anyone can give the comparative running costs/fuel consumption of them that would be excellent too.
Cheers!
Tom

GU=Latest shape.
GQ=The one you would be buying for 20k.
GQ-ST=Carpets, cloth seats, etc.
GQ-Ti=ST with pwr windows-mirrors, auto, leather seats.
GQ-DX=Vinyl floors, vinyl seats, pwr steer, but air cond was optional.
GQ-RX=Similar to ST.
GQ 4.2litre diesel will be quite gutless with a van on the back but on the other hand most reliable. So if you are not in a hurry this would be the pick.
GQ petrol will be great for towing but thirsty, thirsty. thirsty....
GQ with turbo diesel in 4.2 would only be an aftermarket turbo and forget the 2.8 turbo diesel..
GQ 4.2 litre diesel even though it would be gutless it will take you anywhere you want to go and if looked after they will give you 500,000kms++++....
I did a running cost comparison petrol vs diesel in 4.2.................
Taking into consideration the extra cost of 5000k servicing for the diesel and 10,000k for the petrol... Approx $250 cheaper every 5000kms cheaper to run the diesel....
Taking nothing away from 80 series Toyotas which are the direct opposition to GQ's.....but i have always been a Patrol driver and owner without many probs at all...

Voxson covered most of it but I will add a little more.
The GQ was sold in Aust from 1987 to 1998. The 4.2L petrol was a very powerful, torquey beast but used a lot of fuel. Accordingly a lot were converted to run on LPG (liquified petroleum gas) and petrol. LPG is around 40c/L opposed to petrol at around $1/L.
Makes a juice guzzler very economical when run on LPG.
The standard 4.2L diesel produced just 85 Kw and was a slug without a load, add a van and it will be intolerably slow.
Just my thoughts,
Jim.

I'll add more. those on LPG regularly eat the heads... anything from $1000 up to fix.
I've towed with my GQ when we moved from
Sydney to
Melbourne with a trailer load of furniture.. While it was no rocket up skyline, or airplane (couple of the biggest hills on the way to melb- and mines auto) it did it most of the way at 110, that was preturbo on 31s, actually it was stock with a 2in lift at that stage LMAO

Forgot one thing, the GQ from 92 onwards was fuel injected. Had a bit more power and torque and was a smoother running unit.

Tom,
GU current model
GQ previous model
ST mid spec
Ti top of the line
$20 grand would get you a GQ ST
Diesel is the way to go if you are looking for long term towing vehicle.

20k will get you a very cheap and quite possible a bit nasty GU(probably the 2.8 Tdi which I'd avoid) or a fantastic GQ. Then again 15k will get you a great GQ. For 15k you should be able to get a 4.2 Diesel GQ with aftermarket turbo. Save the rest of your money for accessories or put it into the mortgage.
I just bought a great 4.2 diesel GQ with loads of accessories for $9000 ( and 440,000km on the clock!)

too add to the above.
No Nissan australia 4.2 GQ came with a turbo they are all aftermarket.
TD42 is the diesel GQ. You will get ~14-16/100kms
TB42 is the petrol. You will get ~20+/100kms
RB30 is the 3.0 petrol, which is same as VL commodore and Nissan Skyline. You will get same as TB42
RD28 is the 2.8 Turbo Diesel - gutless.
All come in manual and auto, but diesel auto lwb are hard to find.
There is also a swag of
grey imports now badged SAFARI.. They may even have OEM klms on them, but dude on another
forum is lookin at a 89 mod with 80,000klms on it... Talk about over winding it back!
www.gqpatrol.com theres a check list of chit to look for on GQs when buying them.
have fun

Hi tom,Ive had both like Voxson, Ive found the petrol patrol(efi 4.2} cheaper to keep on the road.Did injectors on my deisel cost me more than $3000 fix .Did a fuel pump on petrol gq $400 .You pay more at the pump/consumption regarding a petrol gq,but when some thing goes wrong you are up for big bucks. regarding a deisel .Petrol gqs are get long kms on them as deisels, and the other thing you mentioned that you can fix a petrol by side the road

$3000 for injectors? Boy they saw you coming.
I had pump and injectors done earlier this yr by Clint of BJ Diesel as a backyarder job for $1300ish...
Or you can go with change over injectors from
http://www.agdiesel.com.au/
Remove and refit yourself
$80ea - Genuine NEW nozzles, washers and seals. etc.
They Remove and refit
$210 to R&R the set.
~$720ish
Petrol GQs are not getting 600,000+ without issues.
YAD....

Speak to NickW, he has 560,000 on his GQ TD42 diesel. It still has the cross hatching in the bores from new. Photos on outerlimits if you like to see them.
That yarder job was pump AND injectors. Retail was $2000.00
