Hi Y'all,
Last weekend I spent yet another great couple of days down at Yalwal.
Yalwal is one of the very few recreation areas where we can still go to make good use of our 4WD's.
The tracks of Yalwal present drivers with a wide range of difficulty levels. 'Responsible' drivers will always assess conditions on the day and decide whether or not to proceed along certain tracks. Don't get me wrong, I don't drive the Truck in cotton wool, but I certainly don't 'attack' difficult sections, churning up the track as I go.
For reasons of track and self preservation I tend avoid bush tracks when they are wet.
Anyway, last week I noted a GATE at the entry points to the 4WD section above the Camping Area (the old mining track)! It happenned that a Council Ranger was in the area on Sunday Morning. During conversation, the Ranger said the gate(s) will soon be locked to prevent vehicle access. The Ranger added that a key may be available at the Nowra Visitors Centre.

When reading details at the following link:

Intro to Yalwal Management Program

particularly this section:
TABLE 1 - SUMMARY OF ACTIONS

it seems to me that that the true 4WD tracks will be closed to us indefinately.

I've seen soooo many tracks and trails taken away from us.
I live in a area that used to have a dozen places where I could go 4WDing for the day, all within 30 minutes drive from home. These days I have to drive for 2 hours to get to something that might be of interest to a fairdinkum 4WDer.

It seems we're about to lose that as well.

Really, where is the harm in letting us use tracks that are already established?
Why do the 'authorities' appear to be hell bent on punishing the whole population for the errors of the few?
The BullDozers that have now been put through some of the tracks have done far, far more damage to the environment than I think the Users of the tracks could ever do. I should have taken some photographs of the sections the Dozer's went through... particularly the immage of the creek crossings where waterflow has been all but blocked off by trees and rubble pushed down by the Dozer's activities.

Sure, I could spend my time on the Sand 'n Surf, but I prefer Scrub 'n Brush

Anyway... thats my view!

i cant see the problem with leaving parks open. How much damage can a few tracks do to a park that may be 20000 hectares. the total area of the tracks would be miniscule. 99.9% of the park remains untouched.

It is not just the area of land that the track is physically on that is the issue. Here is a small list of other things to consider:

*Erosion from water runoff from the track
*Introduction of weeds
*Spreading existing weeds
*Tracks cutting off areas to wildlife
*Creek pollution from vehicles driving through them
*Eroded soil running to creeks and choking them
*People making new tracks or widening existing ones.
*People leaving rubbish behind
*Increased risk of unplanned bushfire

Now I am not a greenie and I love to go 4wding but I am not blind to the fact that it is more than just the track that can be damaged.

I have talked to Rangers about parks before. They told me that once they have done all their infrastructure maintenance, admin stuff, campsite checks etc, they have no time and little funding to look after the actual park. So it only takes one inconsiderate group to come through and do something stupid to stuff things up for all of us as Parks have to accomodate for the lowest common denominator.

I think signing out a key and perhaps even paying a bond would be a good idea. However idiot 4x4ers tend to just tear down fences and drive around locked gates.

Some people just need culling. Plain and simple.

A lot of 4x4 tracks around Nowra have been closed...I think all of Beecroft head is now closed to 4x4's...But I think the tracks out to the Walter Hood wreck are open and there are a few good tracks in the area around Pebbly Beach...
I used to play in the tunnels at Yalwal as a kid but I was there last Xmas and it was crowded to the point of overflowing.

This has been in planning for a while now from the info that i have recieved Yarramunmun track will be closed but will be open for 4WD clubs and such by appointment similar to Big Yango access by key for the gate, i recieved info on this from Kathryn Sarris of Shoalhaven council on friday, if anyone wants a copy i will try to send it too you. Yarramunmun track is a council road that runs through a national park same as the road that runs through Royal NP in Sydney.

you ask
"Why do the 'authorities' appear to be hell bent on punishing the whole population for the errors of the few?"

So how do they weed out the few? Easier to just close it to all.

Its not for the few, parks apparently dont have an endless supply of $ to repair tracks each year, their budgets get smaller and smaller as we need to increase spending on "the arts" andbleeplike that. so to help themselves, close tracks is the best option. Im not defending them, but when you sit there and think about it for a while theres a dozen reasons why they would close them.

And this is the exact reason they are putting a gate in and only allowing access to 4WD clubs, not enough dollars to upkeep the track and repair damage caused by morons on a regular bascis.
