Hi guys,

Well sorry I've been so quiet for such a long time. However, I've renewed my membership and here I am. We have finally arrived home after 6 months away, and it is very strange! I think my last post was from Broome, but it seems a very long time ago. We travelled up to Cape Leveque, which shouldn't be missed, but we loved Middle Lagoon better - we could have stayed for a long time. Then it was on to Derby and then up the Gibb River Road. If you haven't been up there put it on your itinerary for the next trip - its fantastic. Drysdale River Station was a great bit of civilisation (thanks Anne), and we left the trailer there while we went up to Mitchell Falls. The road was a bit ordinary, but Mitchell Falls is beyond superlatives. I'd go back there tomorrow if I could. El Questro Station was better and less touristy than I expected, with some quite good 4wdriving to do. The road into the Bungles was also a challenge but well worth it. Thank you to my fellow singer in Cathedral Gorge - it was fun! The Tanami Road was boring and interminable, though our campsite next to Stuart Creek was very pleasant. So home again after a quick trip to Alice, a great weekend at the Beltana Races, and a rest in the Flinders!!!
Next trip, next year - Cape York. Can't wait
Cheers
Anni

Anni,

We are leaving from Port Pirie next April for the West. I am interested in the time you took from Drysdale to Mitchell falls.
If you left your trailer at Drysdale, did you have to camp out before returning, or can you do it in one day comfortably?
I know there is a charge of $50 entry into Mitchell Falls now.
Also, did you take your trailer into the Bungle Bungles? If so what was the trip like?

Roachie, why don't you organise yourself for this trip with us.

Regards,

Geoff.

Hi Geoff,

It took us about 3 1/2 hours from Drysdale to Mitchell Falls - it was about 1 1/2 to the turn off on the Kalumburu Road, and then another couple of hours to do the last 87kms. The road is very rarely graded and pretty ordinary. People do go up there for the day, but you would be missing heaps. There is some fantastic aboriginal art as well as beautiful rivers, views, trees etc, just on the journey in. We took our tent and Drysdale River Station babysat the trailer for free. The walk in to the falls is 4.5kms, and not too difficult. However I really recommend walking one way and taking the helicopter the other, the views from the air are amazing (costs $60). We heard about the charge to stay at Mitchell Plateau from this forum, however it was never collected, so we are not at all sure about it. The campsite is very pleasant with shady trees and good enviro loos. There is no water, so take plenty of your own, though we did drink the river water without any harm coming to us! I recommend buying Ron Moon's book about the Kimberley - its full of really useful advice and has only just been updated. It is how we found out where to look for aboriginal art etc, because none of it is marked, and the locals won't tell you (it is a sensitive issue with the local indigenous people).
No we didn't take the trailer to the Bungle Bungles, though we met people who did. It is quite possible, but very slow (even without the trailer it took 2 hours to drive 52kms). There are a couple of really steep creek crossings but we think it would have been ok if you took it gently. There is a secure storage place at Warmun (Turkey Creek) where people leave caravans and trailers, which costs about $8 per day.
We expected to go to places where we couldn't tow the trailer, so were set up for camping as well. The best advice I can give you is take it gently, get your tyre pressures right, and like us you'll have a great time and not break anything!
Happy travels
Cheers
Anni

Thanks for such great advice Anni.

We are also going prepared for camping, and will leave our trailer at Drysdale such as yourselves, and will also probably leave the trailer at Turkey creek.
I have intended to buy Ron Moon's book, and possibly his video too.

I can't wait for this trip, we are going to be away 3 months in all.

Geoff.

I presume that the walking track from the carpark to the falls is still the same as it was years ago. You walk past Little Mertens and then Big Mertens Falls to reach Mitchell Falls. We took 7 hours there and back(kids in tow) as I wandered off the track looking under lots of rock ledges. Saw some very good rock art hidden away from normal view.

We had the whole place to ourselves...it was July 1986 and there not many travellers around.
