Help,

I have a glitch with my Jack.
During my recent Desert Trip, the Engine Check light came on and has stayed on since. The book says "you may continue to drive the vehicle, but have it checked by a Holden Dealer at the earliest opportunity".

This I can do next week, if necessary as I'm on day shift, but if anyone has any ideas in the meantime, I'm all ears.

The vehicle is running as sweet as ever, so I am convinced that the problem is probably a sensor that may be caked in mud, or similar.

I have removed the ECU fuse for a while and on reinserting, the light does not show for a brief period of time, then lights up like a Christmas tree again.

Has anybody had a similar "encounter" ?
Bill

Hi Sandman,
you may have water in the fuel filter assembly ( water trap)which from memory has a sensor. There should be a drain tap on it!
Also change the fuel filter.

I love being called a Guru.... Mate I have had similar Problems for ages....Go to a holden dealer & they tell me that there was a something in the tangential wowser which caused the problem... go back again with the light on and I get another story....so as has been suggested check water in fuel, check that any power to your trailer connector is not shorting ie socket not full of mud or sand, check your brake pads & hydrolic fluid levels, check transmission fluid, do you have dual battery? check to see that both are ok, and as a special tip...insert drum roll here... check that your fuel cap is not leaking air....

Sandman,

A common one that I have noticed being mentioned on the Isuzu Trooper forums is a faulty or loose fuel cap!

This seems to be the cause of a lot of CELs when there is no other apparent problem.

How much is a brief period of time after you pull the fuse?

From memory about 5 minutes Savvas.

First noticed it about 50 klicks along the Coongie Lakes track.
Very corrugated. but it may have benn showing for a while and I didn't notice it.

Thanks everyone.

Gives me a couple of things to check out.

Failing that I will take it to the dealer to do a full analysis. Just about due for a service anyway.

Gday Sandman
A friend just bought a 2003 model diseasal Jack...and from the auction it went well but had the check light on.
He took it to Holden (under warrenty) and it turned out to be the security system not talking to the ecu....nothing major...thats why it was going so well...
It could be anything...u need to either buy a manual to show you how to retrieve codes and then fix the problem, or pay someone to do that for you.
Dont use a foam filter in your air filter...there is a sensor in there that hates oil.

Dozer... that is very true.. the advice about the oiled foam filters... used to cost around $1500 to fix but now the sensor is available seperatley but still expensive

could even be a loose connector on the Air flow meter or the TPS etc. Don't be too concerned if it still drives normally, but easiest option is to get a dealer to plug in the teck2 diagnostic unit and see what it throws up. It usually only takes a slight temporary loss of signal from any of the major sensors to log a major ecu message . It could even be some moisture has got into one of the connectors past the rubber seals , grab a can of electrical contact cleaner and go over the main connectors on the engine one by one , pop them apart and clean the plug and connector and allow to dry , then re-set the ecu again and see how it goes. cheers

Yeah basically any engine fault in the ECU will light up the check engine.
To diagnose it you have to put it on the holden computer ($50??).
Another thing which commonly fails in the Jacks are the TPS, do a search on it, I had it "go" in mine but drove for another 20'000 no dramas and sold it like it. I believe jackablue has had the same problem and fixed it by taking out the check engine light!!!

Pulled this from an Isuzu prob list a while ago.
"The check engine light is one of the most useless gauges known to man. Unless it stays on for a long period of time (say, several days) don't even pay attention to it, and even then, don't worry about it much.... Only worry if it's FLASHING, That indicates a serious problem. It'll come on as it pleases (due to some test that it might fail, like for instance, riding the brake while it's in gear, which you may tend to do off-road) but it goes off only after certain conditions are consistently met, and only after a certain number of on-off key cycles. The check engine light used to actually mean something on older cars and trucks but now it's pretty much entirely emissions related."

Mine came on one day while 4wding It stayed on all day until I go home.

Cheers

Indeed - I use a serviceable foam air filter system (unifilter) - about 2 weeks after fitting that, my engine light came on - took it to a dealer and they put in on the machine that goes 'ping'. The report was that a sensor in the throttle body (TB) was fouled (the minute oil droplets get in there). Was going to cost about $700 for a whole new TB assembly. Others on this forum have since posted that you can get the actual sensor fitted for about $200 all up now. Still other 'others' have reported that you can clean the original and put it back in. No point if you want to continue with the oiled filter though. The actual mechanic who did the diagnosis quietly told me that my real problem was the light - nothing else - its just an emissions thing - he said if the motor runs nicely, leave it. I will have to clean it up and go back to a paper filter then get a new sensor, at time of sale I'd suggest.
I'm staying as is, becase the snorkel and oiled filter give me a great run in the bush. The original filter got too filthy, especially when the air was coming from the wheel well. Re your problem, it would be important to find out which sensor is doing the send - it may be the same as mine - might not. I'm up to about 2 years post the episode now - all is fine (touching wood) - 92k on the clock. PS: Did I see you o the BV track ? - I was towing a Campomatic.

SandMan ... Let us know what the problem is, if and when you find it.

We'll add it to the jack-archive.

I have done 150,000 in 2000 Jack and check engine light has come on twice - both times I took it to dealer - first time they told me it was dirty sensor (I never believe any holden dealer) but it did go away.
Second time it showed nothing when they plugged it in, rightly told me to ignore it because there was no code displaying - I suspect it was a bit of dirty fuel or the cap wasn't on properly.
Unless it is flashing and stays on (Mine goes off after a while) I would ignore it if you have done all the checks recommended in the post and get a holden dealer to plug it in next time you you are passing one, just in case - normally they don't charge, especially if they service the vehicle.
