G'Day all,
Does anybody know anything about the g 300 wagen. It appears to be a rugged unit with a diesel engine.I think they were around in the late eighty's and early ninety's.
Did they come as a turbo diesel?
How about reliability?
Would it be a viable second car or stick with Japanese?
Have always admired the ruggedness of this vehicle but don't know much about them.
Thanks Mark

Ive never owned a G30o but I have owned a 240d and 300d 124 and 123 series mercs.
Not as far as I know merc has made a TD version of this car {however they are still being made new today and they might now have a TD version}.
STT does a turbo kit for the 300 motor so putting one n would not be a problem.
I had to rebuild both of my mercs a bit too early for my likeing both had injector failures. that lead to wearing the
bore heart shape....
Rust is a mjor problem in G seires cars check, doors, sills, turrents and front chassic members. As with all mercs of that vintage the power streeing box cracks the chassis rail it bolts on to. A half inch plate kit is avaible.
other than unable to get parts for them over the counter they should be a good car but over priced.Good news is they ar starting to coming from the jap auctions for about 7000 dollars landed.
manual or auto ,front, rear diff lock standard central locking {that always fails.....}
not a bad car.

There is a bloke on outerlimits
forum with one which has been used pretty
well.
I drove a brand new one when they were first released here in Oz, blew us away, first vehicle we had ever driven off road with an auto, f & r difflocks and diesel engine. We were stoked and it went
well if slowish. Relatively small donk and a heavy (relatively) vehicle didn't make for great performance.
There were a lot that were turboed, mostly by British and European Motors (I think that was the name, they are still around) at Narabeen here in
Sydney.
Good solid vehicle but bits and repairs could get expensive especially if you are not able to do work yourself. I guess the same applies to a lot of older vehicles that were expensive when new. I see a few around here in
sydney both swb (petrol engine) and 300GD. Still seem to be going strong.

You should be able to pick one up for around $9000. Extremely capable vehicles and very
well built. A bit slow on takeoff and on the highway but brilliant out bush. Very reliable. A mate of
mine has one. Picked it up fr $1500 with a blown motor and it cost him another $6000 to get it on the road.

Mark.
As mentioned the g wagon is a very good vehicle, they are still made, the marketing in this country is not by MB australia but by individuals who come and go so there is no organized supply of parts. The turbo models started about 10 years back but very few in this country. I tried to buy one a few months back but the owner wanted $8500 for a vehicle 21 years old. I reasoned that a GQ with diff locks would be as good with a lot less hassels. Eric.
