G'day all this cant be true but a guy told me that there was a bush fire and the water bombers were called in, later when the fire was out they found a body with a wetsuit, tank and mask the only reason they can come with is that when the water bomber picked up its load from the river it picked up a scube diver.
imagine that!

Happy trails

I thought that happened in Canberra during the fires in 2001...and that it was our chief ministerin the wetsuit..no??? well it should have been... the bloke has given evidence at the inquest into the fires and after our local govenment elections has declared himself the Attorney General running the inquest... but considers that there is no conflict of interest....

I am pretty sure the story of picking up a diver is urban myth, however, watching out for the water bombers is good advice.

I was at a bushfire in northern Sydney a couple of years back when that monster "Elvis" dropped its 9 tonne of water about 10m from me and my drew. Trust me you don't want to get hit by that.

What were uyou doing anywhere near the water drop. The Min safety distance for the Air Crane is 500 mt. & 50 mt for the Jet Ranger with it's 500 lt bucket. Suggest you & your crew should have been else where, but it is a problem when the RFS will not allow crews on the ground to have coms with the air support.

Just me having a bad morning.

Ha Minimum distance ??? try Vic, cfa protocol is that you are supposed to clear all crews from area with radio conformation before water drop, But i have seen it happen a few times, and have even had a load dropped on myself and a few crew while fighting in a gully with knapsacks/ rakehoes. Yeah not happy jan.. I know i could sure as hell see the pilot in the jetranger so he could sure see us in our flouro yellow 'monkey suits' . It's just a political shiza fight down here nowdays and it's just going to get more crews killed by morons.

Vince,

I am with NSWFB and had no radio contact with Elvis, a luxury reserved for RFS crews, I only had contact '`with the forward control. We were \zxcvfighting a fire at the back of a group of houses and had been there for about 20 min. The fire was burning at ground level and flame hight was not more than 1m. It was under control. Elvis had been flying in the area and directly over us for the entire time I was there. He seemed to be working on a larger fire front about 1km from us. We were simply under the flight path between that fire and the supply Elvis was using. The drop was not needed and as far as I have been able to find out it was not called for. He just decided to drop this lot on us, no it wasn't fun.
