I have to replace the factory shocks on my 96 Cherokee Limited. I've called around and 3 have been put forward; Old Man Emu's ($630 supply & fit), Rancho RS5000 ($610 S&F) and Rancho RSX ($750 S&F). The RS5000's were the cheapest but I've been told they are stiff.

I've had the Jeep for just over a year and have been off-road only once, so major off-road shocks are not required.

Can someone please advise what would be best to fit. Are there other brands that are better and similarly priced?

Many thanks

Ranchos are , people either love them or hate them. Plenty of stories of people having problems with the shocks , and getting ordinary Warranty service.

I DO know of a few guys that run them , no problems.

I know LOTS of folk running OME , including on my own. For a good quality , reasonably priced , after market shock , hard to beat.

I run OME on my patrol, and cant fault them. My mate has the Rancho 9000s, 9 way adjustable model (I think the new 9000's are now 15 way adjustable). He loves them, we go 4wding and he changes the settings to suit the terrain if he wants, or if towing, makes them firmer to provide better stability... He is very impressed wth them, and they have not faulted him in they couple of years they have been on. he has done some big trips on them also ( Ayres rock via central hwy towing a cmaper trailer for example) with them on and didnt have them over heat/die..
Also, I have read tough dog shocks are supposed to be good also,, never tried them tho..

I will probably go to the Rancho 9000's to ge the ability to change the settings and they are easily adjusted...

regards
Bryan

Lots of different opinions on this subject. My suggestion is read, read, talk to people and then go with your gut feeling.
In my case I decided to go Bilsteins and have now done 15,000 kms on rough and smooth. I'm very happy with them but I think they are little dearer than the brands you mention.
Don't know where you are but if in Sydney give Michael a call at Northshore 4WD Artarmon. He seems very good and I think gives expert but honest advice.

TJM's XGS shockers could be the go also. Worth a look. These compare well with value for money.

Good Luck!

Hey there 96Cherokee.
I have Tough Dog Foam cells on my Jackaroo, took most of the roll out of the front end when going into a corner and handle pretty much anything you can throw at em. Pai $150 each, so they aren't cheap, but worth every penny in my mind. Shockers are a bit like tyres, everybody has their favorites, best thing to do is shop around and ask loads of questions!
Cheers
