Do a search and you will find that most will say get a GME 3400 or 4400. I personally have a 4400 with all the 'special' channels programmed.

I'm going through the same thing at the moment.

I look like settling on the GME TX3400, mainly because I want the remote head. Otherwise I would go the TX3200.

I don't have a requirement for additional channels.

Just some info for you. The extended channels are receive only and are not user programmable (unless you have the profile software and cables). If you have the special channels in- they are for your area and may not be useful when out of your area. The 'special' services have hundreds of available frequencies and are grouped for a particular Local Area Command. The dealer should be able to help with your selection of channels and should be able to programme in for you.

Try Time Plus Comms in Brunswick. I got a good deal. They will program the unit for free(it's heaps easier) and you'll probably walk out with a Polar antenna to go with it as I did and I'm more than happy with the performance.

They're on Sydney rd, check the white pages. I paid $490 with a Polar antenna but that was a couple of years ago now.

Ring around over the next day or so and get the best price you can.

Check this site: Prestige Communications (WA) and compare prices. You may save a couple of dollars and it may get to you by the end of the week... but then maybe not if it comes from WA, unless you order by phone....

I have the GME TX3400, a dealer can program it in about 5 minutes for about $20. I have the Melbourne Police channels in mine. Looks like they do free express delivery and they will also program the frequencies in for you for free as well (says for a limited time). Guess you would have to ring them to tell them where you are and what channels you wanted.

The TX4400 is $399 with free express delivery

No affiliation, yada, yada... bought my EPIRB here, about best price I could find and saved driving around the shops.

Or, print it out and take it with you to a dealer who should be able to match the price at least.

Cheers,

Wazza.

If you are after heaps of "special channells" then the TX 4400 may not be for you. It has a limited UHF bandwidth (465-485 mghtz) and only 20 available recieve spaces. The Uniden 013 has 450-500 meghtz range and I think 2 lots of 40 channel recievable. It also has a remote head so is able to be mounted in smaller space. Is 10-20% cheaper too. I have used both and have noticed that the GME TX 4400 has a slightly better recieve sensitivity however it is barely noticable. Dont pay more than 400 for either.

I got the Icom IC400Pro from Prestige in the west. It arrived here in Adelaide next day (was very impressed). $400 delivered. Got a local installer to put it in $120 plus antenna.

Easier to ask what the Icom has NOT got in terms of features. Check the Icom website. Very good radio. Icom supply mainly professional markets but now offer some consumer product. Seems a very solid unit.

Cheers

The icom or GME would both be great. I have had a GME 4400 and 3400, and both give me excellent clarity etc. Can't speak for the Uniden, but if hand helds are any indication, I'm not sure I'd buy one. Each to their own.... Just Communications in Ringwood/Mitcham usually have pretty good prices. Usual story - shop around and you'll be surprised at the difference between retailers.
