Do heaps of research on the areas you'll be travelling through in advance.
In car DVD player may be handy to keep boys happy on the long in-between bits.
Takes heaps of photos and video.
Don't rush.
Talk to the locals as much as possible.
Boys education - I assume you've organised something there.
Have fun.

Hi Jacqui, first of all have a great trip, we went for three months last year, we have two boys aged 4 & 5 at the time. We all had a ball. As for education they will learn heaps on your travels, probably the best things we can suggest which our boys did was keep a diary each day and take a few books for reading and our boys also made a scrap book with postcards and leaflets from each plece you visit, writing dates etc. And then they will have something really cool to show their friends at school when you get home, and something to look back on later down the track.

Have fun, Nick & Kristy.

Jacqui,

The advise above is pretty good. I would only add, don't try to see it all. You can't do that in 12months. Plan your trip carefully, be flexible and accept that you are going to drive relatively close to some really interesting stuff and have to drive past without stopping. Don't sweat though you are going to see more than you can remember anyway.

As far as education for the kids is concerned, talk to their teachers now and listen to what they have to say. There are a number of options available. We have twice taken our kids out of school for a full term and they have all coped amazingly well. The diary idea is all they did. 12mths might be different. The other thing we do is get the kids to work out how long it will take to get to the next town. Or which town we might stop in for lunch. It stops them asking "Are we there yet?" and keeps their maths skills up. No calculators allowed, do it in your head or pen and paper at the most. I now ask my son (12) how long it will take.

Homeschool is an option. We have friends, who tour as a family, performing as a country band. 'The Lees" for those interested. They have 4 kids in primary and high school. They homeschool and the kids seem to do OK. Have been on the road for best part of 2 years now.

Hope you have agreat trip
I am seriously jealous

Hi Jawcqui,

agree with all that has been said. we, SWMBO, and 3 kids aged 10, 9, 7, are doing the big trip for at least a few years starting in Dec. our kids are already home schooled and we will be continueing to do this on the road. Why limit yourself to only 12mths. Good luck and hope to see you all somewhere soon.

Bob
