Will a Landrover Freelander TD4 make it in to Duea National Park (Bendethera Valley). If so is there any particular way I should go in or be aware of. Looking to go in early December. Thanks.

Hi Hopalong ,
I was in there last week . The easy way in is from Moruya - the hard way is from the west . From the east it's quite a steep track , but as smooth as .
Does a Freelander have low range . It would be harder without lowrange , but I am sure that I could get in without it . If it rained it would be very difficult without low range .
It's a beautiful place - take your binos to look at the birds and animals .
Do a search on "Bendethera"on this forum and you will see many comments on it .
Cheers ,
Willie .
PS . There is a lot of your relatives down there .

My question too, without low range the brakes would be well used going in and coming out could be a struggle and a non event in wet weather. Definitely the eastern access only.
If in a group with patrol/cruiser size vehicles to assist you could give it a go, I wouldn't if by yourself.
The river crossings can be deepish too and rise quickly in the event of rain.

The roads into the valley were graded a few weeks ago. The wildlife in the valley is amazing - heaps of wombats, birds, lizards etc. Take a camera. There are also fire pits in the valley and some have hotplates as well. Enjoy the Trip. Take you swimmers in December!

Great place that. I was there a couple of weeks before willie If its got low range your ok from the east (Moruya). Watch out for rain once your in there., Depending on what tyres you run. Can get slippery getting out on a couple of hills. Lots of fun in thier though. Some great swimming holes too. kids will love it, just toss an air matteress in water and let them cruise down the river over some small rapids. Beautiful place indeed. Lost of history in there too. Used to have a racecourse as well, yep gee gee's track. Lots to see and if time allows, there are the caves which are well worth the hike to see. But its 8kms walk to the caves so take good shoes and water with you also a good reliable torch for when you sus out the caves. 2 hour trip they recon. Didnt get time to do it as i didnt know they were 8kms away. but its a great excuse to go back...hehehehehe.
Cheers Angelo

The trip in from the West isn't as hard as whats been said ! Mind you I have low range - do you?
There is only one spot just before Dampier Trig that may catch you out. The western approach is a lot better drive than from the coast.

It is a great spot - don't forget your torches for the caves.

Have a look at my trip notes on this site.

Cheers

The TD4 Freelander dosnt have low range but it does have 'hill decent control'. Its an electronic alternative which controls the ABS to each individual wheel at a maximum speed of 8 km/ph on a downhill run only off course. Im told it works a treat. Uphill is constant 4 wheel drive (with no low range). Its an auto deisel so that should make a difference.. Im going in with a 4x4 deisel hilux, which has good ground clearance. He can pull me up the hills if need be!!

I will go in from moruya, set up camp and have a look around in the hilux to see where I can put the Freelander through its paces.

Thanks everyone.

Hopalong, you'll be fine with that plan. The route in from Moruya is not all that steep anyway. We've seen stock Subaru Foresters in there.

Tyres could be a concern (if you are running HTs) getting in or out if it rains, although the Mouya route track has a fairly solid, rocky base so traction isn't as much of a problem as the western and south-western tracks. Having said that, we had no trouble getting several HT shod Pathys in via the west and out via Moruya (despite some very heavy rain the night before).

Have fun but please "tread lightly" in there.

Hi Hopalong,

Good question, as I am planning on going there as well in early December, & was wondering the best way in. I'll be in there from the 4th to the 12th hopefully. If your there at the same time, come & say hello, I'll be driving a white 80 series Landcruiser & towing a green camper trailer.

All the Best, OM&M.

Go from the west. Its been reasonably dry so the tracks will not be cut up too bad. Also since the fires of 2002 they have recieved some attention. As you go through Braidwood call in at the Shell station and buy some 1:25,000 GDA maps of the area. They are up to date and show all the tracks and trails as well as contours. (Gives you a good idea of gradients). I suggest you get the following 3 maps. Badja 8825-4N, Snowball 8826-3S and Bendethera 8826-2S. They are $8.25 each but worth it. One side is a map and the reverse is a satelite photo of the area.

Got back from deua natioanal park just over week ago.
The Freelander made it in and out with no problems. The hill decent control was amazing on the down hill runs.
Someone even posted on this site a warning about the rain and trying to get out, well guess what it rained all night and all morning the day we left.
We had no problems although the road in and out from the east is very good but has some very steep sections. Low range wasnt needed thank god because the Freelander does not have it!!!
While we were in there we had a drive up to The Big Hole via the Dampia Trig. But we attempted this in my mates Hilux.
The Freelander definately wouldnt have made it up and down there, mainly due to lack of ground clearance.

Thanks everyone for the tips, Duea is one of the best places I have been in this country so far. Well worth a visit . Ill be back there soon.
