I am interested to hear people's experiences in mounting up an xbox and attaching to one of those LCD screens.
My intention would be to have the ability for the kids to watch DVDs or play games to while away the hours on boring parts of a trip but then switch it off once the roads get rougher and the scenery more interesting. Let's face it, you don't take the family away to do what they can do at home!!!
how do they perform on different road surfaces?
what sorts of roads do others turn them off for?
Is there anything else I need to know?

Thanks in advance,
Nick

easy set up Nick , you will need a small inverter to run your PL or x box , or whatever games you like . Screens, well , were do you start , take a pic , they all work , I dont use it once I am off the black top . But found it a blessing for those long trip.

Not having kids, I wouldn't ever need to install an entertainment device in my fourby - but I can understand the requirement in your instance :)

Wouldn't a PS2 be better for your application? Given that it is relatively solid-state (i.e. no moving parts apart from the DVD drive mechanism) I reckon it would be more reliable, over time, than a hard-disk based console such as the XBox.

Then again... if you've already invested in s/ware.... you might want to really mount it well in a sprung shock-proof system of some sort.

As far as the LCD screens go... I have a work mate who has his connected to a cheapie 6" LCD panel that he bought at the last Sydney Motorshow - and it works a treat for his kids. Consore mounted on the rear transmission tunnel in a ventilated box, and the screen strapped to the rear of the front passenger's headrest. This causes arguments, so he'll be getting a second screen for the other sude when he can afford it......

Hi Nick,

I have a 7" roof mounted LCD screen hooked up to a DVD player. Its really great for those long transport sections when you simply don't have the time to look around. Certainly delays the "are we there yet" chorus.

Currently I haven't connected a playstation or Xbox up, but the screen has a second input so its all ready. As mentioned earlier, I reckon a PS2 would probably survive the corrugations better (thats not based on experience). My DVD has handled the corrugations well so far, no skipping at all ( but mostly switched off when in the rough stuff, the kids love that).

Cheers

Thanks guys, good to meet you all too. I find it somewhat confusing matching the screen name when you meet the people in person!!!
I didn't realize I had already met Bonz!!! Met a few EO people now, sure to meet more too.

The inverter I bought on ebay (300w @ $75) should be here in a day or so and I have had the xbox for 2 years.
Just need to get a screen and we are away, will go to the shops for that, hard to get exact information on ebay, some don't handle stereo sound.

Looks like room under the front seats to fit them in, then I just have to poke some decent wire through the firewall

Nick R,
Personally i wouldn't recommend putting an Xbox in a car, due to the amount of vibrations that you get from the road. it wouldn't be good for the internal hard drive, it would shorten the life of it. Screens, are varied in design and price, there a literally 100's of them out there, if you don't mind buying online i would check out ebay.com.au or brisbane car sound online, both places you can find really good deals. you can pick up a roof mounted lcd screens from about $200 (a roof mounted lcd screen will require removing the roof lining and running cables if you diy). For mounting the Xbox, it really depends on the 4by, amount of gear that you carry, accessibility and how many kids you have. (The Xbox really is a large system, might try picking up a slimline PS1 and some cheap games just for playing in the car, it would be easier to mount being a much smaller unit). My younger brother just bought an Xbox and they really are a heavy and bulky unit. Anyway that's my 2 cents worth.
