G'day all,

Don't want to be seen as plugging a store, but had to share something with you. Was looking at buying some jerry cans and had decided to get some good steel (Pro-Quip) and Black Rheem jerries (thanks to all the advice on this forum).

AutoPro have the 20L steel Pro-Quip jerries on sale for $39.95 at the moment. Pretty cheap I thought. Printed their brochure off the net and marched on in to Bunnings. What do you know, 20L Pro-Quip jerries for $47.47.

I picked a couple up, walked to the service counter and asked them to price match. A quick chat with a supervisor and Smocky gets a couple of jerries for 10% less than the AutoPro "On Special" price i.e. $35.96. They were even polite about it and said "thanks for pointing that out to us sir, have a nice day".

Thought I'd pass that on in case anyone else was in the market for a couple of jerries.

Cheers,

Smocky.

P.S. Thanks again for all of the replies about what type of jerry cans to buy. With this and the Repco fridge, I've saved more than enough money to warrant joining up as a member.

Smocky, take you receipt back and get another 5%, Bunnings advertise in Vic that the will beat by 15% now. Makes them even cheaper.

G'day John,

My brother works for Bunnings in Melb and said the same thing. It's actually 15% in VIC and 10% in NSW.

I had actually thought about going in there with the VIC policy and saying OK, Bunnings VIC will give me the jerry at $33 so I want you to beat THAT by 10%. But I thought that might have been "not playing in the spirit of the game" so to speak.

I'm happy and I reckon $36 for a Pro-Quip steel jerry is a good deal.

I'm only after fair prices, which is why I generally avoid "specialty" stores like camping stores and 4wd stores. Prices are generally jacked up too much.

Cheers,

Smocky.

Yep,
that is Bunnings' stated policy...
"If you find a stocked item at a cheaper price, we'll beat it by 10%"...
(or words to that effect)...
They work on the premise that (relatively) few people will actually take them up on it, therefore their marked prices are, as often as not, higher than the competition....
(some bargains to be had in there, nevertheless)...

Definitely pays to shop around.. Good on ya!!

G'day Truckster,

Yeh I knew that but,

1. Army disposal stores are pretty hard to find up here in Sydney and I would have spent more in petrol and time driving to a store than just getting newies.

2. Not really know what I was looking for, I may have got one that the seam had gone or needed a new seal or didn't lock properly or whatever.

Thought it was just safer to buy new. That way I know where it has been and how it has been looked after :-).

Thanks for the tip though.

Cheers,

Smocky.

I'm in northern suburbs now and there's none out here.

I used to live in Melbourne and near a good one and I miss it.

There are also the "fake" disposals stores which are really camping and outdoor stores selling new stuff. They're no good.

And as for going to the city, well it would have cost me twice the discount in bloody tolls anyway.

Cheers,

Smocky.

Hey Truckster, I think that these days a bloke would be a bit pushed to get genuine ex DD (defence dept) jerries.

I have a couple of them - made by Rheem - from galvanised plate and stamped DD with the usual arrow between.

These are dinki-di genuine heavy duty jerry cans - not the crap birdbleepwelded jobs that are seen at most places these days.

Hey Smocky, I bought one of those $400, 3 way fridges from Repco, also. I've used mine twice on camping trips & it goes OK in or out of the car.

I have a few jerry cans I want to get rid of. 6 steel ex army (All in good nick. No leaks and good seals) and six polypro water type. Water ones are pretty much brand new (used on one trip across the desert)

Does anyone want some freebies? I dont need them anymore. Have long range tanks etc. Was gunna put em out with the hard rubbish but they're to good to thro out and I don't know anyone who wants them.

Don't want any money just karma points is all. What goes around comes around.

I'm in Yarra JUnction in Victoria. Whoever wants em has to come get em.

Mick, I'd be happy to have a few, but won't be greedy and take more than I need. I can come around and get them. Well, more the point my brother can get them and I'll pick them up at Christmas when I'm in Melbourne. (That's actually when I need them too.)

You can contact me via:

jason@jpl.net.au

to make arrangements.

Thanks very much for your generosity.

If you still have any of those jerry cans left, the local scout group I help out(look after their trailors) would be most gratefull, for fuel for rescue boats and drinking water on camps, e-mail me on chevotaracing@hotmail.com if you have any left.
Thanks in advance.
