Have purchased a second hand fridge/freezer, a 47l Supakool. A couple of questions if I may.......
1/ Any feedback on this unit from those who have had one or know someone with one?
2/ If I were to run this unit on a 12v deep cycle battery, when in one location for a period (and have access to 240v supply), and charge the battery with a small 4 amp charger at the same time as running the fridge, will this create any problems??
Cheers
Grnn

Go to Altronics or Jaycar and buy a decent 12v power supply for it. Then don't worry about the battery or charger. Much more portable that way too.

Yeh thats been the other likely option, only reason the battery and charger has been given a run is that if I don't manage to find the 240v supply I can utilise the battery to run the fridge and some lights for a night.
Ideally I would like to have a decent dual battery system installed in the vehicle and have the 12v supply but the budget isn't that healthy at present.
Any idea on cost of the 12v supply? I have looked at a unit that a Waeco dealer had in stock at about $99 for a 6 amp model.

I had an electronic isolator and it failed. a few weeks ago I went and bought an Arrid Smart Solinoid from The 12 Volt Shop. Cost me $135 and is just as bloody good as the isolator and smaller to boot!
If you're already buying or have the deep cycle, it's the most expensive part of the whole setup.
Just buy a couple of pre made battery leads, whack a bolt through the smart solinoid and connect it all up, mate peice of bleep . Don't kid yourself, it's really that simple. Have a look into it, it'll be well worth your while.

Grnn,

The chances are the battery charger will stuff up your deep cycle battery through overcharging, unless it is of a "smart" type.

I would recommend that at a minimum you include an automatic control unit if you take this approach.

Sell the supa kool (old type comp) before it breaks cos it will. I heard all the stories about them fusing and cringed when a mate bought one about a year ago. It fused a few weeks ago and he has just bought a new Waeco.
By the way, I own an Evacool ED40

hi grnn,
i agree with ferret but instead of selling it ask eva kool to put a danfoss compressor on, i have done this to my 60l supa kool and it works a treat (a great ice box with a compressor). give them a big sob story and try to get the price right down.

Will give Evakool a call and see what I can do, in the mean time will make sure I have extra ice in the esky so that if it all goes pear shaped the beer won't get hot! (wife won't be happy about the tucka going off but a man isn't a camel)
