Hi Wasa,
Have a look at our Anne Beadell Trek Note for some contact numbers for the permits such as the
Maralinga Lands Transit Permit.
Please also note that the Trans Continental Railway Service Access Track is closed from
Tarcoola SA to Rawlina WA and persons found travelling this will be heavily fined.
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Juliana.

Wasa,
we drove from Vokes
Hill corner to
Cook at
Easter 2000. The top part of the track had some low dunes, and I remember ripping the power antenna off the LX470 on some encroaching vegetation. As you get further south across the northern Nullarbor the track turns into a series of parallel dirt freeways. This part gets a fair bit of use from the locals. I towed the trailer with ease, and compared with the Anne Beadell and Mt Davies Roads its a doddle.
Cook was a ghost town. There are some caves between
Cook and the Nullarbor Rd house worth seeing.
The most amazing part of the trip was to head down to the coast from the Eyre Hwy and reach the cliffs of the Bite. We camped a bit further east by following the
dog fence south to
the beach.

I've done the
Cook road three times in the past 3 years. Its a nice run. Theres two rainwater shed tanks along the way which were pretty full two months ago. Pass a couple of aboriginal wells. Len Beadell put the road thru in about 1961 from memory.
Need permits as Juliana has said.
Cook isn't quite a ghost town. There is a resident caretaker (Jan) who runs a "tourist"
shop for people getting off the train, and often opens it up when a 4wd group goes through. The old school is an interesting place to visit, but please leave everything intact - they are trying to preserve the place. Its also the sleepover point for the railcrews. Theres lots of trains passing through there.
Cheers
Phil

Thanks Phil G (SA), for response to my request. It must be a good area if you have been there 3 times. We are intending to tackle it in June/july 05.Thanks wasa
