Howdy All ,

I am just putting together my itinerary for my two week trip back from the Daly River to Sydney via the Plenty Hwy in May .

I would appreciate anybody who has been to any of the above National Parks giving me any opinions or info on those parks attractions and accessability.

We will be spending three nights in Litchfield at the start of our return trip , but the rest is still up in the air .

Thanks a lot ,

Willie .

Elsey is pretty, can be busy but nowhere as busy as Mataranka. Good swimming, can get pretty warm too. Good amenities.
Davenport Ranges are worth a few days at least, nobody there when we went a few years ago, Needed 4wd to get in there too. Looking around Hatches crk mining area was interesting but dangerous, lots of open shafts near the headworks, very easy to fall down. No facilities when we visited about 5 years ago.

Peter ,
Thanks for the info . We might give Elsie a miss then as we like to get away from the crowds .
I waqs thinking we might go down to Bino ( spelt ) harbour for a couple of days as the guy fishing with me has never caught a queenfish ot a GT .
Then two days at Buly Rockholes and then up the Reynolds River track ( water levels permitting , and then down to Davenport and Dulcie .
I had a look at a map and there are no roads shown going in to Dulcie - so they must be pretty rough tracks .
Is there any waterholes in the Davenport Range or is it as dry as ??
Thanks ,
Willie .

If you miss Elsie you will miss the dutch packpackers in the thermal spring waterways!!!!!!!!!! Seriosly though the Mataranka/Elsie area has some nice attractions and I spent less than 1/2 a day there it made a good stop before ending up at daly waters for the night

Unfortunately I'd reckon the top end is busier than ever these days, been 5 years since we've been up there and it was busy then. Worth going and having a look at Elsey as it is quite pretty and the amenities were very good and there were less there than anywhere else.
There is permanent water in the Davenport at (I think it's called) Policemans hole or something like that, huge expanse of water and grass to camp on, we had it to ourselves as not a lot go in there, need a 4wd and caravans and soft roaders would have probs as it was quite rough. I was back into low range with the camper on the back easing in and out of washaways and down creek banks. Stretches of soft sand and very rocky in spots but well worth the visit especially if you can spare a few days.

Davoe ,
I have been to Mataranka - it is beautiful . Lucky there was no spunky blond backpackers there - I might have had a heart attack .
Thanks ,
Willie

Peter 2 ,
Thanks for the info on Davenport NP . In Willems article it says there are seven species of fish there - I might take a light rod and some small lures and see if I can catch any to have a look at .
I will have a Trak Shak on the back , but we are in no hurry so we will just muddle along and avoid damage .
I am just about to take off for a Korean dinner with the bride .
Happy Christmas ,
Willie

Davenport Ra NP
The Leyland Bros TV show had an article on this NP last week - great place.
From memory there are a number of spots with permanent water.
It has been 20 years since I was there - I mapped the area and produced a 1:250 000 map called Geology of the Davenport Province - a nice map which I have hanging in my lounge room.

Colin ,
Thanks for that info .
Are you a geologist or a cartoghraper ?? Being at Bungendore there is a mine near there - Woodlawn I think - do you have anything to do with that or is it just a coincidence ?
Twenty years ago , Davenport Range would have been pretty rugged .
Is there any interesting geology in the area ? I love collecting interesting "rocks" and looking at old mines .
Thanks and have a good New Year ,
Willie .

Retired Cartographer.

The mine at Woodlawn is now a Sydney rubbish tip - and I worked for BMR/AGSO/Geoscience Australia.

The Davenport area has some fantastic geology which is a bit hard to see from the ground - but the Ra would look great from the air !!
