I have owned a '99 3.0 TD Jackaroo since new. Apart from a few peripheral problems such as injector oil seals and ratting steering (both corrected under warranty) the engine, gearbox and running gear are running very sweet at 110 000 kms. The body is rust free and could easily last for 20 (?) years. I am wondering how long the vehicle will last before major problems occur, such as worn out engine, or gearbox u/s. or other major costly trauma. I realise that much depends on how the vehicle is treated by the owner, driving style and conditions, servicing intervals etc.. Whilst I consult my crystal ball, I'd be interested to hear from other owners ..........

Can other Jackaroo TD owners please advise how many trouble free kms they are achieving before major components become generally worn out and require replacement or rebuilding ? 250 k, 300 k, 400 k, ???

Steve, Serviced regularly you will probably romp home with 3 -400 000ks before requiring anything too major being done to the engine..I always do the oil filters at 5k with the oil change. I'm still on my 2nd clutch and brake pads at 300.000.

Hello Steviebee, I own a 1992 V6 3.2L Jack and have 236000Kays on the clock.I know it isn't the TD but have only owned it since may this year and when i got it it had 215000Kays on the clock.Luckily I managed to get the service history with the vehicle and I bought it privately. Just had a new clutch installed as the old one started to slip but that is normal wear and tear. As far as the motor is concerned it runs like new. I change my oil every 5000kays and filter 10000kays.I have not been able to find any rust in it so far and a even chips in the paint don't seem to rust. The only thing I have problems with is that the LSD back diff is not so LSD anymore but if you get stuck just pull the handbrake a few notches and you will feel the LSD grip again.
Over all they are a great vehicle and with normal servicing and care will last a long time.

My 99 TD SE has 95 on the clock and runs sweetly. I too over-service as an investment. My habit with cars, for seems now a lifetime, is to look after them and only to change them when my needs formula changes. I've had my share of repairs, but all reasonable in scope. You will come across a lot of people who change frequently, but the usual huff and puff boils down to somebody else paying some of their costs (or they are being fools to themselves). If you were to compare the price of change over / depreciation on a string of cars to the repair costs of keeping a few, there should be a big saving . Keep the difference and buy more toys is my plan !

I am on my 3rd Jack had a 91 td (old shape) traded it on a v6 94 model when it had done 150,000 mechanic told me it was in excellent shape, I now have a 99 td just about to come up to 100,000 none of these have given me any problems the v6 i sold after 120,000 was too costly in fuel, and I do love my td's, I change my oil every 5,000 as recommended but also only use one mechanic who knows the jack very well.
All in all i would recommend this 4b to anyone I know the post below has had problems but I guess we all buy a lemon from time to time, My father had a 90 4 cyl petrol that had over 250,00 on it no problems at all.
Cheers

I have only 70k on mine... 2002T/D Jack but i am strongly advised that top shelf oil is the only way to go and maintainence is mandatory...

I've heard that oil is critical for TD Jacks as well. To do with the Caterpillar injection system needing oil pressure to be spot on to work properly.

ONLY use the correct type of oil in this engine.

Generally 300000km + should be achievable given appropriate maintenance, but you never know when something may give out unexpectedly.

My V6 is coming upto 90000km, still on original brake pads. Shocks generally give out early, especially the front ones so look for signs of oil leaks on the shock body. Another item to watch out for is the CV boots on the front axle.

I have also read somewhere (not sure where) that the injector seals are now regarded as needing replacement every 80000km. So might pay to keep that one in mind.

Savvas, did you do the cv's yourself cause the boots on my 95 jack have gone. If so are they hard to do cause I've heard that they can be really tough to remove.
Cheers.

Hi Jackman,

I haven't done them yet, psyching myself up for it.

If you follow the service manual method it can be a very long winded process. I'm looking at doing it this way ... click here. Which SHOULD be quicker. However, it will still be messy.

I'll also be ordering the POP-RI boots from Mecatech, rather than going for the standard or OEM type. Click here for the boots. $120 for the 4, plus $10 shipping from Melbourne to Sydney.
