It's not really "FREE", the gov dropped the fees but also stated that there would be no revenue loss to the indigenous owners... Guess there'll be another hidden tax somewhere.

Sean

Kakadu has always been free to enter, it just depends on which way you drive in.
We usually go to Shady Camp and then on to Cooinda via the dirt road and unfortunately we don't pass the Rangers station, except on the way out to Pine Creek.

We used to go there for day trips and , if early in the morning, we would just not stop at the gate by taking the heavy vehicle slip road or Just tell them we were visiting someone at Jabiru. Last time I was there it cost $20 odd dollars each (from memory).

I didn't mind paying to camp there as the facilities are good but it was too much to have to buy a 5 day pass to see if there wa water in the river.

Was there in July and it cost about 17 bucks each. At the same time was told that Ayrs Rock was being increased and they even thought is was a rip off. While I thought it was awe inspiring it's still a rip off to the max. Especially when you know how the money is distrubuted, as per one of the rangers there.
