They are a good thing for short distance, car to car when travelling or road reports from passing travellers trucks etc.
We also use them from boat to boat when fishing the lakes.

Hay Dave,
We carry them in addition to our fixed UHF in the vehicle as they are great as a backup but moreso we use ours if we are out of the vehicle on foot and need to talk back to others in our group who we may be travelling with.
Cheers
Brian

Thanks for the info. The way you have described them doesn't really indicate that they would be much better than the smaller powered units. Does anyone have a thought about this please?

Dave,
It depends on what your primary use for the handheld is. If it is only for an additional means of communication to a vehicle mounted unit or close proximity to other units, then the cheaper options are a good compromise.
In the Uniden range there is a UH-041 model of 1 Watt power for about $78.00 from Dick Smith's or even cheaper from Prestige Communications.
Perhaps a better compromise without blowing the budget is the UH-044 with double the power output (2 watt) for $135.00 from prestige. This is a very good unit IMHO.
Without getting into a
mine is better than yours war between different Brands, the beauty of the UH-041 or UH-044 units is that they operate on 2x AA batteries, either rechargeable ones, or the "energiser" jobbies.
I can also recommend Prestige Communications, based in W.A. You can order online and receive your delivery within a couple of days.
Uniden Handhelds
PS: Prestige also sell the GME and ICOM brands.

HOWDY DAVE.
I HAVE AN ELECTROPHONE TX 6000 HAND HELD & WHEN MOBILE I HOOK IT UP TO THE EXTERNAL AERIAL & IT WORKS JUST AS GOOD AS A DASH MOUNTED UNIT.
MY EXPERIENCE ONLY.
HAVE A HAPPY ONE.

I have a couple of UH 041 in the garage in almost new condition.
I may be interested to sell them. Hardly ever used.

Dave,
We use a couple of these at work, flexi antenna tends to break so up for a new one, rubber grips on side fall off very quickly.
Output O.K. but I would call range dissapointing for a 5W unit, may-be due to problems mentioned above.
If only as a back-up or car-to-car go for a cheap unit, I bough a Hoffer 0.5W for $35 from Strathfield. Works fine for car to car.

Soooo Dave, what'd you do? I am looking at a 5w handheld and the Uniden looks good from a size perspective but Rolandes comments about range are a concern, the Icom and GME's also have user programmable channels so one could monitor SES UHF channels or Police if they still use UHF in your area.
Thanx

I ended up buying the Uniden UH-075 for $369 which included a patch lead to enable connection direct to a standard external UHF aerial. I figure this could be handy as I can easily take a better aerial with me in my tinny or kayak.
The unit feels good and solid, whilst being quite compact. I haven't had a chance to test the range yet. It works fine in suburbia over 2 km, but I haven't had time to try it further. I will need a trip somewhere to fully test the range under different condtions and terrain.
Sound quality seems fine.
As
well as 240V, I can also charge the battery from 12V. A lead to enable this cost $14.

Dave,
Happy New Year. Don't have experience with Uniden 5W h'helds, but we do use Icom and GME 5W units. As spares, we have a couple of 0.5W Uniden UH040XR, which do surprise, at times, with their perfromance.
DSE has the 075 for $397, in latest catalogue. For that money I would put a few extra $$$, and purchase an Icom, or GME. They are the "class act", in this scene.
The Icom seem more robust than GME, ie don't need repairs, but the GME can "hear" better then the Icom. This is important when you are using something with such a small aerial.
We use both Icom, & GME for mustering, so they have a hard life. Have never considered Uniden, their quality is just not up to scratch.
Hooroo...
