Bill,

Been driving one of these for nearly 2 years, and never had a starting problem...yet.

Have you checked all the fuses? Anything that you were doing just prior to this, that may have caused problem? Like deep fording, hit extra bad washout, at speed?

If the fuel and battery are right, it points to an electrical fault.
What about the fusible links, are they okay?
Can you remove the cover over the injector pump, and see if there is power to the fuel solenoid, at rear of pump.
If that's a goer, then maybe look at the 'puter. After that it's "hello Mr Tojo..."

Good luck with it Bill, keep us posted. Feel this would be the first post with a 1HDT-E engine problem, on this model tojo.

Bill,
Yes, check fuses, connections and the like, but I wouldn't go pulling covers off pumps etc. One year old, will be covered under warranty. Ring Toyota dealer and tell them to come to you to fix it (after all, it won't start) or, have THEM arrange to transport it to their workshop to look at. You have handed over good money for the truck, it's their responsibility to give you after sales service. Keep us posted.

Rob,
Would agree with you that it's a warranty claim if it won't go, but I did not suggest to remove the cover "off" the pump itself. I meant the cover above the pump. It looks like it would take an hour to remove(but probably wouldn't), but is necessary to remove it to see the injector pump, and access the fuel solenoid wire.
If one wasn't familiar with this model, then it would appear I was suggesting to remove top off the pump.

I have a similar list, but dont forget the basics, and I'd be betting on fuel.
#1 Haven't run a tank dry? Is there air in the fuel line?? Pump the plunger on top of the second fuel filter until its hard. Air can get in from a crack in the filter etc.
#2 Dose of bad fuel - or biodiesel - blocked fuel filters??
#3 Faulty fuel cutout solenoid
# 4 Fusible link broken? Have you got a second battery setup, and moved a couple of things around?
#5 Fuses

Also, theres a new LCOOL list starting up for the 75/78/79series called

Hi

Thanks for responding - guys

...car is with fix it guys....they dont get back until the 4th of jan...so they cant do anything really...soooooo

....I went to (ripoff) Toyotas ..their mechanics are back they will have a look at it
tomorrow.

.....roadside assistance ruled out fule, fusable links etcc.. and tested the solenoid
which he thinks this is the problem....

Question...car is at Mechanics??????..should ripoffs Toyota ($900 for my last service with toyotas) pay to get my car from the mechanics to Toyotas. The mechanic road side assistance people paid to get my car from breakdown point to their workshop...however they said it would cost fifty dollars extra to get my car to
Toyotas ...$50 to drive 2.5 km..ripoff or what...Is it reasonable to ask Toyotas to
pay for transport.

ohhh....by the way I drive may car 45,000 kms over corrugated desert rocky tracks for my work and then when I get to the city and drive my car to the supermarket....the silly thing stops working....go figure....I am not happy

fusable links are fine
fuses are fine
not sure about fuel...i was running low on fuel and felt it surge.and then got some fuel.dirty fuel?
not likely because i get fuel out bush..i am hardly likely to get dirty fuel when i suddenly come into
town...

I have twin batteries with a rotronics type setup and switch where you can
lock in both batteries....with both batteries locked in...the thing wouldnt work

..anyway I will find out tomorrow what the problem is ...

Bill,

Sounds to me like you should join the RACQ. That's what they do best.
Fairly cheap insurance mate.

regards.

Hi Bill,

The HDJ79 is a high maintenance vehicle - the 40k service would have included valve clearances, wheel bearings, both fuel filters, all the oils etc. Hence the high cost.

I do my own maintenance, and it still costs a lot for parts and oils.

Hope it gets sorted. BTW, fuel delivery is usually checked by backing off one of the injector unions while cranking the motor. If the fuel solenoid was inoperative, there would be no fuel at the injector. Also the fuel solenoid is checked by listening for a click sound at the injector pump when turning the ignition on and off.

Best of luck.

Cheers

Could be anything including algaie in the fuel tank from months ago. Good advice of Phils.....Toyota will pay for towing, but you will end up paying for it in the bill anyway...dont bother....join the racv and get them to tow it....maybe they will fix it too.

Bill,

What happened in the end???
What was the problem?

Also, feel free to join the 70scool group. Quite a few HDJ78/79 owners there.

Cheers
