I haven't been there yet, but a couple we met on our recent travels have been on the road for 7 years. I asked them what was best place, and they said lawn hill and gregory downs. Said they free-camped right at the waters edge at Gregory Downs.

If you are around that area, put King Fisher Camp, Bowthorn station on the must do list. Road in is a bit rough but if you take it easy there'll be no problem. I towed a 16ft Off-Road van in with no problems. Drove out past the Bowthorn Station Homestead and then on through Lawn Hill Station and on to Lawn Hill NP. Kingfisher camp has beautiful grassy camp spots under the trees, Azure Kookaburras and Pretty Face Wallabies. Close to permanent water holes on the Nicholson River. You can hire a tinnie and go fishing or just enjoy the peacfull bush. Run by Husband and Wife team who part own Bowthorn Station. Lovelly people too.
Lawn Hill NP is magnificent. Gregory Downs is nice if you get a spot on the river and there are clean puplic toilets and shows just up the road.
Love to do it again.

Hi Hedevil

In regard to Motherhen's reply.
You are not permitted to camp on the Gregory R anymore.
They stopped that late last year.
Maybe up near the Gregory Downs Hotel you maybe able too?
Ask b4 you get there.

Hi Max

I'm sure you would still be able to go down to the river for a day visit, unless they have fenced it off?
You also used to be able to camp behind the Hotel which is just up from the river.
It truely was/is a very picturesque river to camp by but boy did it get overcrowded there at times.
Probably why it is now no longer a non camping area, what a shame!

Hi Ross

Can only go on what I read in the Sunday Mail late last year, said it was closed off to camping.
Maybe someone else knows other info?

Hi Hedevil & Ross

You will cross the Gregory R heading out to Adels Grove & Lawn Hill from the Gregory Downs Hotel.

Info just received today.

Council’s policy is to close camping on the river bed of the river at Gregory. This will be in place from April this year.
