Hi all
It's been about 20 years since I've been to
Lightning Ridge (NSW), and have to go up that way for a week to visit the rello's. I've forgotten what's up that way...
I was wondering what camping there might be along the way from
Sydney (around Dubbo) for the first night, and also if there was any good camping around the Ridge itself. We are looking at the Warrumbungles and Siding Springs areas.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance :)
Chris

We stay in
Lightning Ridge overnight once a year on the way to
Townsville. We always stay at the main caravan park on the left on the way into town, great place. It has a cafe, pub etc
The last vist we spent an extra night and did a little touring, we went on an opal
mine tour, if you stop and the info centre on the way in they'll give you a map and there are self drive tours marks by coloured car doors.
If you have kids there is a fantastic water park with a wave
pool, slides, things for all aged kids!! $5.50 to stay all day! They were also completing their olympic diving
pool. Very interesting place, the locals are friendly especially at the bar at the caravan park. Not everyones cup of tea, but we love it there.

about 2 years ago we stayed at the same place Steve did. No complaints, handy if you enjoy an ale or 2.
On the way, we stayed at Coolah Tops. Weren't there long enough, but seem to recall quite a bit of wild life in the area.
Also checked out the Warrumbungles and Siding Springs too.

Stayed at the same place as Steve a couple of years ago in a tent.
Grass, shade, good amenities including laundry, hot water etc and only a short walk into town centre.

Last time we were there it was stinking hot with no breeze, and we were wishing for one. Woke up at 2am to an absolute gale, even the small rocks were rolling along the groung, tent poles to the camper blowing over and the swingout kitchen was swinging!!

Thanks everyone for your replies :)
We are there for a week, staying at my folks-in-laws place which is the "Black Queen: bottle house.
We'll be participating in the local goat races and stuff (along with a fair few beers) and then heading off to the Warrumbungles and Siding Springs for a look-see too.
The Ridge is a pretty bohemian place, so we shouldn't find it too hard to fit in ;)
