We're planning on taking a 2-3 week trip to Nth Qld in July/Aug this year. Given that we're coming from Sydney and have two kids <2.5 we realise that we will not have enough time to the top end. I'm thinking about going from Mt Isa to Cairns on the dirt via Lawn Hill NP.

Any other suggestions for trips that are family friendly would be appreciated.

Lawn hill is a deffinate must . But you could go up to Cooktown on the inland road (Bitumin) And down the daintree road(dirt) back to cairns It's well worth the drive, lots to see & do When you leave lawn hill go across to normanton then through dunbar station to chillagoe See the caves worth doing. then to mareeba cooktown
daintree mossman port douglas cairns . Very scenic drive.

If you are up around Lawn Hill (which I agree is a must - I prefer Adels Grove rather than the NP area) see if you can put Bowthorn Station/Kingfisher Camp on the list.

Take the alternate Savanah way to near Almaden, Chillagoe (check out the caves) and the Info centre, go via Palmer River and be sure to call in at Laura and check out the new Community Cultural Display, the Quinkin Art, then go via Battle camp to Cooktown.

Cheers
