Camping ??

Cooktown - small caravan park fairly well in centre of town - walk to pubs etc. A good spot.

Weipa - Only one place - Caravan Park

Top - Seisa, Punsand Bay. All more or less equally good

Enjoy the trip

Cooktown CP & Punsand both have pools which are good since you cant swim anywhere else. We were camping but I think they both have cabins.

Hi Mid

I read your post below and all those places I mentioned have cabin type style accommodation as far as I know.

Also you can stop at cabin type accommodation called Bramwell Lodge at the junction of the old telegraph track and new southern bypass road.

I'm not sure if there's more than one CP in Cooktown ? But we stayed at one with a pool in 2003. I remember the owner yelling at kids doing bombies.

Thanks for the info guy's but I was hoping that we might give the girls a break from camping at these places so I am really looking for a nice motel or good clean cabins. I believe the Safari tents at Punsand Bay Resort are pretty good?

Thanks again

Hi Jeff,

My info is based on being at Punsand 2 years ago. We camped but yes the Safari tents did look good. Set in a grassed shady area with, as mentioned above, a pool. Also a cafe/restaurant. (Cafe during the day and more expensive/elaborate meals for dinner). We would definitely stay there again if we were up the top. The trip to Thursday Island is a good day out but yes, it does take the whole day and you mentioned 2 nights so that might be a bit pushed given you would also want to go around to the tip.
I see you mentioned 2 nights at Weipa and 2 at the top. I guess that's just where you are asking about accomodation, and does not mean you would try to get from Weipa to the top in one day.

Cheers

Hi,

We drove to Cape York last year and stayed at Punsand Bay. It was fairly run down and DID NOT HAVE FRESH WATER. We had to boil everything before we could drink it. I believe it is now under new management. The pool consisted of one of those above ground jobs and the kids had fun. Also, inspite of what we were led to believe about electricity... we had to piggy back off everything so that our fridges would run. We were TOLD not to run anything else besides our fridge or we would overload the powerpoint. In spite of all this, the campground is set in a bush type setting and is quite nice. A few of our group had severe stomach upsets after staying at Punsand Bay. The trip to TI and Horn Island was great but it was a very busy day - we really enjoyed the trip to Horn Island with Liberty showing us around. If we were to go again we would be staying at Seisia campground.

At Weipa we stayed at the only caravan park. Watch the pool - all our kids got ear infections after swimming in there. Also, some rude touring company packed up one morning at 5am whilst we were trying to sleep after listening to one of the long term people arguing all night - not happy Jan!

Highlights were definitely Fruitbat and Elliot Falls - watch the public amenities - they are totally disgusting..

Recommended staying on the way up/back

Hi Jeff,

We went last year & had a fantastic time. You have the info you sought but re The Top. We went to Loyalty Beach first (because of input from this forum) & stayed 2 nights - it was way overcrowded & the people were not helpful so went & had a look at Seisia - it was great & people very helpful. So transferred to Seisia for a few days - we had our own area & kitchen sink etc & would recommend it very much.
