Hi All,
Off to Cape York next tuesday, very excited!

I am after a good butcher who cryovacs in Cairns and a good mechanic because I think I will get an oil change in the Patrol before the drive back to Sydney.

Also has anyone actually had their vehicle searched for alcohol on the Cape? Dont get me wrong not planning to open a bar or anything but would like to carry a carton of beer.
Cheers.

Just make sure you don't let the butcher work on the patrol and the mechanic near your bear and steak or your in big trouble.

Just having a laugh, have a good trip sorry i can't help

Or at least make sure he/she washes his/her hands before handling your meat. Actually, a kilo of snags in the gear box may quieten it down.

We were warned with dismissal at work (QLD Gov) to absolutely not even think about carrying alcohol through the restricted areas - no excuses. It is a political hot potato up here at the moment and apparently "the law" have been told to prosecute to the limit.

Also know of a few innocent cases where there was no intent other than to consume once past restricted area - no difference, and copped a big fine.

Hi Groove,

Try Chris Laas Service Centre 07 4051 9336. On a recommendation from the forum 2 years ago we also had Patrols serviced on the way through. Very happy to recommend him.

Cheers,

Darren

I used ARB Cairns last year and found them to be great.
Cant help with the meat, other then to say I didnt cryovac, just topped up along the way. There is good supplies at weipa cooktown and bamaga (at a minimum)- and it wasnt even that expensive. Actaully wollies at weipa is very good pricewise.

There are so many different regulations on the way up. Just keep checking. We drove into one communitty after we hid some beverages on the side of the road. Didn't get searched and the loot was still there when we drove out!!!

If you are going via Cooktown there is a very good butcher in the main street. Young bloke that supplies the pubs and restaurants. Dam good meat.

The butcher at mosman is very good.
The mechanic at Caiglea just south of poer douglas knows what he is doing.
And yes you can carry beer and wine as long as it is as per the law.

All the best

I could tell you a mechanic to avoid, he was in Atherton. Atherton did have a great Chinese though.

The best butcher we found up that way was the Endeavour Butcher Shop in Cooktown. Also the most reliable information about the roads and what to see and do on the cape came from tourist info in Cooktown.

Wish I was going.

Hi Groove,

Mate, I have to agree with RossP, the endeavour butcher in the main street has the best meat I have eaten in years!
We just came back from up there on thursday and stocked up on cryocac'd meat from him on the way up, the marinated steak is to die for.
The mechanic across the road is also very friendly and helpfull, did a quick check over and tightened the power steering belt for on the spot after I just walked in off the street and only charged me 15 bucks.
Pretty dry up there except for the daintree/cape trib. area, if I had another 4wks I'd go with you.
If you are going along battlecamp rd through old laura to lakefield I hope you've got good shocks.
Hope you have a good trouble free trip.

Avagoodn
