Hi Guys, I'm doing a simpson crossing in a month or so. First trip... very exiting. I have some heavy duty roof racks but they are not much use without a basket. Does anyone know where I could hire a roof basket or something like it in the norther beaches area of
Sydney? If it makes any difference I have a GQ Patrol. Cheers

knowing what the folk on this
forum are like you are likely to a) get someone wanting to sell a basket at a very reasonable price or b) offer you their roofrack for liquid compensation - hold off making a decision for a while!

what are you planning to put up there? Those baskets dont have much weight capacity if I remember.

Why do you need a roof rack - you should be able to put everything you really need in the vehicle.

I did not make the remark in a sarcastic way - from some experience I simply asked the simple question - what do you really need to put in a roof rack.

Truckster, I have noticed this increase in electrical /other equipment - even fan heaters in camper trailers. I have also seen on a weekly basis the snapped roof racks, the rolled over vehicles due to top heavy loading of roof racks, and it worries me because I really think people put far too much (unnecessary) gear on and in their vehicles - if they were to go over a weighbridge before leaving town they would be very shocked at the weight factor. Still, I'm just spitting in the wind - who really cares.

Anyone thinking of doing this trip would probably need to carry the second spare tyre on the roof. That's all I put up top.

Ruth : look on the good side...he's not trying to do it with a Land Rover...reminds me of the two that went over...and made it to your Caravan Park...or the one that ripped off the roof and landed on the bonnet and in front of the ..Mitsubishi Challenger...that was over the yumps...

Thanks for the posts guys. I'm just putting a 6th spare tyre on the roof and a gas bottle (don't think it's such a good idea to put one of those in the car). I might put my satelite dish up there for my digital tv but haven't fully decided on that one yet. Being a pilot I know a little bit about loading things correctly :)

I have a roof basket (no clamps) laying around and not going to use it soon. If you want to buy it, OK. If you want to hire it OK. Anyone know what it's worth.
