Is it possible to head north from Yarrongabilly Caves to Brindabella and then east to Canberra via the national parks?

Yes. You'll have to check if it's open over winter.

There's even a GPS Plot available.

You might be able to confirm access at Dept Environment & Conservation.

g'day,

I believe this track is actually openat present but only until the Tuesday 14 June, probably closed for winter. I assume you are talking about Long Plain.

i looked at this when heading home from Deddick at Easter. I covered a bit of that area whilst firefighting 2 or 3 yrs ago so was keen to see more. I asked a local at Adaminaby and was advised that for varioius reasons (people pig shooting etc.)it is not open anymore. Was not convinced but as i was pushed for time (had to get kids home for school next day) I opted out.

Thanks for this. It makes sense to be closed over winter.

What is the road/track like between Tumut and Canberra via Brindabella?

Thanks for your help.

Can get very narrow in places between Brindabella , and Piccadilly Circus (Top of the Brindy Mountains) , and quite corrigated.

If you take your time though , its no big deal

It is possible to do this trip. I am a Canberra local and have traveled through here often. The Long Plain Road leaves the Snowy Hwy east in between the loop road to the Yarangobilly Caves. You can head north for a while up this road past Blue Water Holes but a locked gate will greet you at the southern end of Brindabella Valley. It was closed some 10 years ago because the locals in the valley complained about the road being used too much and being maintained. Fustrating to adventurers like us but fair enough I reckon. You will need to head up 'Broken Cart Trail' that heads west about a half hour north from the Snowy Hwy. This trail in on some maps. It eventually takes you to the road between Tumit and the Brindabella Valley. There are two options, one that is rough and was challenging a few years back and one that is quite easy. Keep in mind I was in a Forester last time I did it so in a good 4WD you will have no problems. After taking the Broken Cart Trail, head west for a while then turn right at the next main cross intersection another 20 mins in and it will take you north. You will end up going through what seems like private property but there has never been any signs to indicate that you can't go through there. Good Luck. It is a great place to be.

Thanks for the detailed notes. I'll take them with me and see how the weather is when I'm at the turn off.

Cheers.

I did the Long Plain Rd about 12yrs ago have heard since tht it was closed but that was a while ago too.

The southern end of the road is very slippery after rain so if it is wet take it easy.

Pretty country but and if you can get through it would be worth a little effort.
