The Supreme Getaway (offroad Vans) come with Loos and Showers in the 13ft Pop tops.

Personally , I find that a bit small to do that , but , nonetheless , they have them

Just open the door and hang one out the side. Can do this in a 6x4.

I know it sounds a good idea to have your own loo - but I know lots of people who, after the initial thrill, don't use them at all. It is very rare to find people who use them doing no.2's!! They have to be serviced ( ie insert chemicals) and emptied all the time. A bucket can be just as useful and much less expensive to instal and maintain. AND they take up an enormous amount of space, particularly as you are obviously looking to buy an economy sized van.

Perhaps just buy the van that suits and buy a portable dunny.

Then you can put the dunny wherever it suits; outside behind a tree, in the annexe, in a dunny tent etc.

Portability and flexibilty.

Cheers,

Jim.

While some of the others have posted the alternatives to having a bathroom, our 18' Bushtracker was fitted with one although it was low on our priorities. Spade is still our main loo, and from previous trips we had one of those "pee bottles" from magnamail with "lady flange" so cold nights were not a problem. Staying with son once and his girlfriend's naughty 3 y/o nephew got into our caravan while we were out for the day and was found "drinking" from this red bottle. They feared it might have been oil or something nasty. Years later we still all laugh about what Michael had! (It had been emptied, but not rinsed.)

We generally bush camp alone, but i can see that there may be many times where bush camps without facilities would be shared with others, and the loo would be invaluable then. I have had a few "under pressure" moments.

Our van does not have an outside shower which i would prefer, but we have a large bowl from our earlier camping days, so in a warm climate a bird bath under the stars is the way to go, but on cold nights the hot shower will be appreciated.

Carrying water adds a lot of weight to the van, (with our 4 tanks, around 240 kgs)but depending on length of trip, you need not completely fill the tanks. We used to cope with two 20 litre jerry cans, one for drinking and one for washing water.

Some people we met were downsizing, so to have plenty of room in the 16 footer they were having custom built, choose to fore-go the bathroom and have an outside (hot) shower, used with a pop up shower/toilet tent and a port-loo, all can be used under the annex or just outside on overnight stops. A good alternative.

Go to the well known manufacturers eg Jayco, Windsor, Coromal and if possible visit a caravan show.

From what I've seen, the smallest van with a shower/toilet was a Jayco Freedom poptop model 16.52-3 (body length 5143mm or 16ft10inches). It had two single beds, which some people prefer when touring in warm areas. Jayco has an island double bed in a model 17.55-3 (body length 5473mm or 17ft11ins). Add about 1.5m for overall length. www.jayco.com.au

By way of additional example, Coromal make a 5.4m van (model Excel E54) with the kitchen up one end, and island double bed and an ensuite with hand basin, shower and toilet. Pop top. www.coromal.com.au

Shower and toilet are handy for cold rainy nights or staying O/night free camping. It also means you need to be more careful about how much personal stuff you carry because there is inevitably less wardrobe space.

With the weight of these vans (think about laden mass) you would probably need a Falcon, Pajero or Jackaroo minimum. But you must check with Dept Transport, the vehicle manufacturer and the towbar manufacturer. Do not accept a salesman's 'say so'.

Have fun.

Last time I looked, the smallest was a horrible little green one called a Portaloo. LOL. Just a builder's toilet on two wheels with a drawbar. Bit of a problem if you're expecting it to have a bed or any of those other caravan luxuries tho'
