I have an exhaust leak that i can not find - here is the scenario and what i have to locate it so far --

Exhaust leak can only be heard when motor is under load , ie you will not hear it when idoling, rev whilst in neutral - no exhaust leak evedent - hit the road and its instantly there - it almost sounds like an individual cylinder leak as its not a contant leak sound but every 6th fire ( if you know what i mean ?)

now - whilst i had a friend block the exhaust with his foot to allow pressure to build in the exhaust system - i got a spray bottle and sprayed around every where there are gaskets and a point of a possible leak ( with soapy water ) --- found a very small leak between the cat and the header pipe -- so fixed that ( but not the problem )

One of my customers ( chatswood toyota ) suggested it may be the power valve that goes from the exhaust to the intake manifold - the noise does sound like its comming from drivers side of car - i can not see any evidence of leak - tried to put the car in gear and load up with hand break on , but can not get same results as ON road

has anyone else had this problem before ??? can anyone suggest anyting to me ????

Car is a 93 Toyota Hilux waggon - 3 Litre v6 SR5

thanks

Frank

Has truck got a snorkel??????
Sometimes under accellaration you can here resonating niose from intake air being drawn in & sounds like an exhaust leak.......
Wet a rag & hold on exhaust to get a better seal to check for exhaust leaks.
Good luck

HI guys , motor is Petrol , so no need for snorkel - if there was a crack in the manifold - would'nt it be evident when i plug the exhaust and squirt soapy water everywhere ?-you can hear exhaust building up a LOT of pressure and no leaks around the manifolds at all ( took of heat sheilds for better viewing access as well as side pannel in wheel arch ) it only makes noise on road test NOT on driveway test INC reving motor ...

As said before,I'd have a really good look at the manifold for a crack.

Frank is there extra (?) soot around the EGR valve...sometimes than can stick and leak out under load!
Otherwise I would be thinking...exhaust manifold...sometimes VERY hard to see a crack even when the manifold is off and in your hands.

Goodluck with it!

HI there , thanks for your reply. Unfortunatly there is no soot evident anywhere -- i have taken a VERY good look around - runnining my finger al over manifold and egr valve to find even slight traces of soot - but alas , nothing .... If the exhaust manifold was cracked - there would be soot evident in the heat covers right ??? there as silver as the day they were pu on the vehicle - no discolouration at all

may have to spend a weekend on this thing :(

Frank..I would like to say yes but alas..NO! There doesnt always have to be soot present on a crack ie lots of it! I replaced a Feroza manifold (huge cracking culprit) and there was nothing but a hairline black line...yet it whislted like a banshee!

I have also had the unfortunate experience of chasing a tapping noise on a VS commodore with sportes exh and extractors..Ended up being the slightest leak across a tiny portion of the exhaust gasket where the headers bolted up. No soot or anything evident!

Have yoiu tried having someone move around the vehicle..ie front seat then middle then back to help in pinpointing the origin of the noise..it might help with diagnosis if you knew its engine, not y pipe, cat or muffler.

Goodluck mate, sorry cant be more help!
Matt.

On my Rodeo whenever I have a sound exactly like you have explained it is always the flange gasket. The one between the manifold and the pipe.

I have replaced it about 5 times in 4.5 years. Not lately though (fingers crossed).
