Are Garmin and Magellan maps compatible?? About a year ago i got rid of my Magellan gps. I had purchased the Mapsend topo software for the unit as
well. I gave the unit to a friend, and now i want to buy a different brand, a garmin rino becuase of the radio/gps combination. Does anyone know if the MapSend software will work on a garmin? I dont want to have to buy more software. What would happen if i tried to download the maps to it, since it is magellan software and a garmin product? Kinda funny how Magellan calls thiers Mapsend, and garmin calls thiers Mapsource. hmm.....i got a feeling they are intentionally programed different so that they wont work together. I hate it when they do that crap!

In short, NO. The Mapsend software is unique to the Magellan UPS.
Why do you hate it when they do that crap?
They are only protecting their product.

Yes way! (kind of)
There are programs out there that will convert a garmin map into a format that may be used in a magellan (I'd guess that it may be reversible??)
You're going to have to do some searching though!
You have a right to be angry about it too ;)
The maps are all vector based, but the formatting (info) of the vectors are different.
Search "Yahoo Groups" for Magellan or Garmin groups and have fun reading :)
The conversion is not easy though.
ps. I haven't done the garmin-magellan conversions, I have only read that software exists, I haven't yet successfully converted any raster maps for use in my Magellan, it's too tedoius at the moment :/
cheers.

While the competing brands are deffinitely NOT compatible at all, both GPS can be used with Oziexplorer (and yes it is made in the land of Oz) with either a laptop or PDA. This opens up a range of lower cost maps for integration with GPS/PDA (my combination).
Also keep in mind that the garmin rino uses channels (frequencies) that are not authorised for use in Australia, and transmission of data in UHF CB is forbidden except for a specifc channels (for telemetry). WAAS is also not effective in Oz (its USA/Canada only). The included base maps are USA (only).
