Jimbo
Now this is a dinkhum question.
I can get a winch at a very good price but do not want to add the expense of a bullbar.
Has anyone, or do you know of a way, of fitting a winch to the chassis rails without a bar?
Surely it's possible?
Cheers,
Jim

Jimbo , what vehicle
easy on a landcrusier just get a big piece of checkerplate run from chassis rail to chassis rail. front crossmemberr to engine crossmember. use the tow point bolt points and any other captive nuts you can get into. mount winch to checkerplate , weld up a angle ironframe for rollers.
have had this on 45. 60 and 80 series no probs

Jimbo,
A heavy plate could be bolted to the chassis rails and the winch could be fixed to it, but the bumper bar will have to go. This is a problem when it comes to the vehicle complying to ADR,s.
You got the winch cheap and a winch bar from the Trading Post should not be hard to find.

On ARB winch bars the winch mounts in the bar. However going from memory on TJM bars the winch mounts seperate to the bar in a cradle. Could be worth investigating.

Jimbo
As said before depending on what type of vehicle depends on the type of mount that you can use.
On my old GQ Patrol I had an aluminium bull bar so I simply use a C channel that went behind the bull bar 180mm x 75mm x 5mm with two plates welded onto the ends with the bolt holes drilled to match the mounting holes in the chasic rails. Just had to cut the correct size hole in the bull bar to allow the cable and flare head.
This worked with no problems and I was able to remove the bull bar without removing the winch if I needed to work on the vehicle.
I think from memory that the Warn web site shows a cradle mount as in the States quite often they mount them this way.

Something else that no one has mentioned yet Jimbo, although Wayne touched on it with his thought about compliance..........air bags!!!
I have seen plenty of cobbled-together arrangements on older 4bys which did not require a bullbar. But with todays compliance regs etc, I reckon you'd have to bite the bullet and get a proper bullbar (even a Smart Bar would be okay if you're worried about weight).

Jim, as I posted on the other site this morning, it can be done. If you're in
Sydney send me a pm on the other site and I'll give you the number of a company who will do it for you. If you're willing to have a go yourself, I'll give you a hand.

Thanks Crack A,
Can you email me at jimbest at internode dot on dot net
Unfortunately I'm in
Melbourne, unless you want to come down, I won't be able to take you up on your kind offer of help.
Any ideas of how to do it will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim.

If you can come up with a design Jimbo, I could weld it for you and I don't live too far away from you either.
I'm in Berwick as
well :-) (southside quite near the car yards)
Regards Andrew.

Thanks Andrew,
I'll have to give it some serious thought and check out any ADR issues.
Cheers,
Jim.
