G'day Steve
The photo of the van on the
Tom Price Road is our old van and yes there were two spares on the roof when we did the big run. That van was a mid nineties Viscount on roader that ended up slightly modified to suit a bit of offroad work and was unfortunately outgrown.
The new toy (new van) is a Coromal PC 546 off roader (dirt roader is more politically correct). Tandem, independant
suspension, pop top with all of the luxuries of home, air con, hot
water, external shower etc but unfortunately no hot and cold running barmaids, the other half wouldn't let me take that option!
We purchased the van new in May and apart from the 1000km run home from
Darwin have managed a couple of bush runs around here for the weekend type stuff. Very happy with its performance, comforts and off road abilities. Obviously any van in the scrub is not as nimble and manouverable as a smaller trailer and does restrict where and how far you can get into the bush but thats a trade off we are happy with. On the bigger trips we are happy to get as close to where we want to go with the van, set up base
camp and tent it in if neccessary.
Over the past few years we have progressed through the chain from tenting to camper trailer to on road van to off road van. It all depends on what your comfortable and happy with. I just found that I'm really over tents/trailers were I have to spend the end and start of my travelling day setting up or dismantling my bed.
The price of new vans/trailers is always a the cause for some dilemma as to what should we do. We are more than happy with our decission.
Cheers
Wal
