G'Day all,
I'm after some info on plastic storage boxes. I'm going on a trip that will involve using quad bikes, something that I'm looking forward to as I've just recently bought myself a new Honda quad. Anyway .... I'm after a lockable/latchable plastic storage box with a hinged lid. Preferably
water & dust proof. I intend to rubber mount this on the front rack of the quad. It will be insulated and used mainly for carrying small electronic items, ie phones, chargers, cameras, EPIRB .... and a fitted
UHF radio with VOX mike. I'm having a hard time finding a box for this purpose. I have seen some similar boxes on roof racks of 4bs that might work for me. Can anyone point me in the right direction on these or somthing like them?
Thanks guys,
Regards,
Bazza.

ARB , have the Boxes that go on the Roofracks, not sure on available sizes though. Also pretty $$$$$.
Your altenative maybe to buy a lockable plastic toolbox , and put the items in a waterproof bag (available from Camping/Hiking shops). Should be cheaper , but will certainly work.

Just back from trip to
Louth for the races.
Bloke we stayed with had a Honda quad with an old munitions box bolted onto the front carrier. Carried all his gear but would need some padding if you were going to carry anything fragile like camera gear.
Reckon you could pick one up at most disposal stores.

Good camera shops have various sixe plastic boxes called "pelican" or similar. (They'll know what I'm talking about). US-made, with foam inside you can cut to size, 100%waterproof (with a valve on them so you can equalise pressures to be able to open it !!!), and really rugged. They are also used for various other electronic equipment, firearms etc. Not very cheap but price/quality sure is ok. I'll look for a link...
Cheers
Ted

Hve you considered a plastic tool box. Some of them are near-on indestructable and come with facility for using padlocks for security.

I recon thats the way to go- Space cases (the ones often seen on roof racks) are $300 for a decent size, whereas a similar sized plastic toolbox is $40 from supa cheap. Attack it with some adhesive backed foam and a tube of silastic and its watertight and
well padded. They generally come with smaller trays and compartments for helping with organisation.

G'Day all,
Thank you all for your advice and ideas. The plastic tool box is a good idea and I have looked into it. Unfortunatly they are too narrow, if they were twice as wide they would work
well, and cost bugger all.
Ted, thanks for you ideas on the Pelican boxes. A great thing, but a bit too expensive for my use. Some of those boxes are dearer that the total cost of the gear I'll be putting in it, but it does look a good product.
I've got a couple of months yet, so I'll keep looking. If no luck, I may be able to get a aluminium one made up and a reasonable price.
Thanks again all.
Regards,
Bazza.

What you're after are Space Cases, these are the plastic boxes sold by ARB, but you can get them cheaper than at ARB, for example our local Farm Supplies sells them. They are not cheap, but are strong, dust and splash proof. We use quite a few different sizes in our local CFA and I know the army use them as
well.

I use Tropical ice boxes for storing stuff on the boat. EvaKool and others also make quality industrial plastic insulated ice boxes. Get one of the smaller ice boxes and cut a few slabs of non porous foam to put under and over sensitive gear.
If you want a latch and lock just bond one on (or rivet?).
Plastic boxes are often dearer than ice boxes.

In Big W,
they sell a 20ltr drum that has a screw lid that people use when Kayak-ing
and it is
water and dust proof, just line with foam and pack accordingly. Reasonably cheap as
well.
