i'm looking at a suspension lift for my gu ute to get some better wheel travel. i've looked at OME and went to another 4x4 place where they were just arrogant and just wanted me to go for a 5-6 inch lift. so far as i can work out its the shockies that are holding it back. but everybody says its the anti sway bar as well and if i did get more travel it'd hit the diff (this was from the bloke selling the OME who drives a gu ute so i sorta trust him)
so i'll get to the point. does anybody know of a good suspension kit to increase my wheel travel? only want a coupla inches lift, 4 at the most but haven't decided. self fit is good or thrugh shop.. i don't care, i just want more wheel travel.

i was also thinking about putting airbags in the rear so i can have softer prings in the rear for daily driving and little weekends and pump them up for heavy loads and long trips. any ideas about this as well?

Couple of things to consider.

Most insurance co's wont touch you with more then 2 inches of lift.

5 to 6 inches would have to be around the Engineering Certificate mark , due to increased brakeline lengths etc etc.

AFAIK , the two biggest limiting factors are , Shock length , and sway bars.

Long travel shocks , sway bar disconnects , and a moderate lift , would be easy to achieve , and would have very little trouble with legalities and Insurance.

what reason do you want more wheel travel.
most stock 4bys are quite adequate in stock form for most things.
do you plan on doing extreme thinkgs or just a little weekend work.
lots of people just go 2inch enought for the little harder bits but not to much that you cant get insurance without hastles.
let us know your plans and you might get a little more help.
cheers

what do you want the truck for?

what tires are you running or planning on?

what state are you in - some wont allow 4inch at all.

rid yourself of swaybars, get longer shocks and springs

GETTING A MATCHED SET IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING - Shocks to springs.

My very limited suspension understanding here, but how can you remove the sway bars? Won't it cause extreme instability?

Not extreme , but enough to notice.

I dont run sway bars on the front of my Pajero , and its made a HUGE difference to wheel travel , but , It can be very noticable around roundabouts.

I wouldn't dare take off front AND back.

There is plenty of discusion on the legalities of removing sway bars as well.

Disconnects may be more appropriate. Just disconnect them when needed.

I havent run swaybars front or rear for 3 yrs.

Its like anything, take care when first trying it, dont drive like an F1 car, and you will get used to the changes.

see

home page patrol

That is my 6 week old GU ute with 4" lift [now has 6" lift] which has adj panhard rods, castor plates, loger shocks, 4" lift springs, brake bias valve bracket, heavy duty relay rod, and drag link, and heavy duty rear lower control arms.

Most of these things are neccasary for reliable, good travel and exceptional road manners.

Mine also runs 4.88 diffs and 37 x 13.5 /16 tyres on 16x10" rims.

A suspension package to do up to 4" with correct road handling doesnt cost much more than just "springs and shocks" but it does make them nicer to drive when done properly.

my wheel travel is quite limited, in the rear, better than the torsion bars on the hilux, but not great, i saw another bloke with 2" lift who had about 3 times the wheel travel mine did when i jacked it with the hi-lift.
wasn't planning on going for bigger wheels just yet cos it opens up a pandoras box as much as suspension doesn't it. i want it to work well on shart trips as well as long (why i was thinking of the airbags)
i'm in sydney
