Hi All,
Pardon me if these are stupid questions....
I am doing some planning for I trip with the family, through the Flinders Rangers then up to Maree -
William Creek and across to Cooper Pedy. leaving mid September.
I hoped some of the more knowledgable here might be able to clarify 2 points for me:
1. Am I right in understanding there is no need for a SA desert pass to travel from Maree up the Oodnadata track to
William Creek and then across to
Coober Pedy? ( I was planning an an overnight at
Coward Springs)
2.The road from
William Creek to
Coober Pedy - what sort of condition is it in? I assume best to take it carefully - but I am pulling a
Tambo camper with my Discovery, I assume that taken sensibly this road should be quite passible.
Cheers,
Mark

No need for a pass on the
oodnadatta track.
The road from
William creek to
coober pedy will change day to day with rainfall but its not a bad track at all. Just take the steady as she goes approach and lower pressures and watch for gibbers and you will be fine. Have you thought about continuing up to
Oodnadatta and then going to
Coober Pedy? Just a thought.

Thanks for the quick reply Brew69,
Yeh I have thought about going up to Oodnadata and back down - I might yet.... as you said things do change depending on the wheather...
The extra distancevia oodnadata was my plan if someone here ( or closer the time -a local up there) told me it was likely to get ugly hopping across.
Cheers, Mark

Yep - no pass required there - last time I drove the Coober - Wlm
Creek road it was generally very smooth. All depends on weather, traffic volume and road maintenance patterns. The overall approach to bush travel, is that if the road is declared to be open, you just take it as you find it. In fine weather, more than often these roads are all very good gravel surfaces. With lower tyre pressures, sensible speeds and a good eye for the odd sharp stone, it should be easy going with your rig. The road from
Oodnadatta back to
Coober Pedy runs through some very attractive country (known as the Break-aways) - not so on the other leg to
Coober Pedy..... mind you, we are talking a lot more k's, but you may have the time - there is plenty of interest on the btrack north of
William Creek.

When on the
William Creek to
Coober Pedy road, visit Lake Caddibarrawirracanna(longest name in South Australia). It is only 6km in from the road.
Last timne I did that road it was wet and we had some fun getting bogged on a section of clay surface but generally it is a normal 2wd bush road.

Hi Mark
We did the run
Brisbane,
Birdsville to Maree then
William Creek and accross to Cooper Pedy with the van eighteen months ago, had to take it slow in some
places, but generally fine, even passed a mini road train on the road to Cooper Pedy, No passes required, in September weather should be warming up, I don't know about the discovery, we have 100 series and the temps were up to 48deg. the air con stopes at 42deg. so a bit unpleasant at those temps with the three kids till we got out of Cooper Pedy and headed for
Port Augusta before air con reset it self,
William Creek has an air con service and they informed me the cruisers are set in Japan at 42deg, when the temp gets back to that it will reset and sure enough it did. Lots of good senery out that way, Cooper is worth a day or so plenty to see under ground.

Thanks everyone for your information. I think we will make a final decision at the time as to whether to go through
Oodnadatta or not.
Really good to have so much helpfull feedback - certainly makes the planning easier!
Cheers, Mark
