This particular crossing can be quite hairy. It is deep river sand and there are significant bolders (ie big rocks).. it is very good diff cracking and axel breaking territory and shouldn't be attempted as a lone vehicle. That said, if you are adequately prepared (winch, diff locks) you shouldn't have too much difficulty. From my perspective, I would travel the extra distance to the other crossing adjacent the Mt Mulgrave Station
homestead. You will need to keep travelling towards
Chillagoe - about 90 kms short of
Chillagoe (coming from the Gulf) turn left - crossing of the
Mitchell here now has a concrete causeway.

Last time I was there the track on the other side of the river was 2 metres above the
water level. The river had worn away the bank. No way we could get up there. The actual
river crossing was not too bad

Hi Voxon,
We were there in in July 2002. Did a write up on the trip but I have a photo of the river here (no thats not us stuck). The Ford Courier was running road pressures in his tyres and had a hell of a lot of weight. We scull dragged him out without too much issue.
The track onto the riverbed is
well marked and crossing the river is straight forward providing you do not deviate from the track (most important). Its not tidal at the crossing but runs reasonable fast. It was thigh deep when we were there. We camped on the riverbed but the sand can be soft so scout around for something a bit harder. The sand down near the river can be like quicksand hence the need to stay on the track. If you deviate you will sink like our friends.
Regards
David

Hi Voxson
I drove from Musgrave to Normonton via
Mitchell River 4 weeks ago, nice drive. very easy,
There is now a dirt bridge/road across the Michelle river, so you don,t drive across the
water any more.

We crossed here on 1st June 2002, the
water was a bit deeper than the picture linked above, we had no probs, the bottom was OK, but the sand on the northern side was a bit soft. There was a grader fixing up the track on the northern side, as we passed he busted a tie rod end, and we ended up giving the driver a lift up to the
homestead. He reckoned we were the first vehicle through for the season. I don't think I'd be wandering around in the
water like in the picture above though, he also reckoned crocs were fairly common in there!
Cheers
