The things you do while on holiday............

We spent a week in Birdsville in July and whilst there, my mate Judith, found the Gibber Mosaic workshop in progress. Being the artist that she is, she went along and helped make some of the mosaic tiles. The project was sponsored by the Regional Arts Fund and it will be on display as a feature at the Birdsville Clinic and Wirrarri Visitos Centre. Other sponsors are the Diamantina Shire Council, Birdsville Caravan Park, Birdsville Hotel, Big Red Cafe, Wildash Glass Works, Hartley Williams Glass and QCAP.

This community project took four weeks to complete.

The method of construction was to make the modules in reverse. First the glass and then the gibbers were laid and then cement poured over to hold it all together. The gibbers were from around Birdsville and lighter colours from sandstone in the local quarry. The concrete modules have been placed ina stell fram to form a feature wall.

Today Judith received a Certificate of Appreciation for her contribution to the project.

Hello Lynda

Yes I believe so. Wasn't sure if it was on display yet but apparently it is.

Gidday Willem

Both panels are up and look marvelous. All the individuals that took part should be thanked for their time and hard work, in particular Alain & Kate Colfs for their tireless dedication in seeing the project through and Louise Gaffney for her efforts in raising the funding.

I believe Tambo Shire have approached Alain & Kate for a similar project and we wish them all the success for this and other future projects.

Regards to both you and Judith

Karsten,
Could you please post a couple of pictures of the mosaics?
My daughter's keen to see the finished product as she did one of the tiles.

Thanks......

Gidday John

Gibber Mosaic Project

This link is the display outside the new Birdsville Clinic. Is it one of these panels that your daughter created ? If not, let me know and I'll add the other display.

Enjoy
