had a phone call today went like this
Ring ring
Me - Hello
Lady - Hello Mrs Gunderson, My name is Judy from Accor Hotels, and you have been selected for a free holiday worth $800 at any of our hotel across Australia.
Me - Sorry not interested
Lady - Blah blah blah, wonderful facilities
Me - Sorry I go
camping, I'm not interested. (getting a little frustrated now)
Lady - You can use it anytime over the next 12 months (Is she not listening, Hmmm how to get her attention)
Me - Actually I could use a holiday, do any of them have grassed areas
Lady - Yes, many of them have beautiful gardens.
Me - Great, so I could set up my tent
Lady - Sorry
Me - My tent, there would be plenty of room for a tent.
Lady - No you can't
camp at the hotels
Me - Sorry then I'm not interested.
Lady - (Silence)
Me - Goodbye
Sandy

I find it best if you try to pick them up over the phone....
Ask them things like:
"what are you wearing", "what are u doing on friday night", "u sound cute"...
just throw them in as they give their talk, see how long they last.
If you can keep them on long enough, make the questions cruder and cruder....
Try to find out if they are into swinging, nudism, or beastiality...
Works even better if they are a guy...

Yes, yes! If they don't want to answer ask them why. Offer to call them back later and ask for their number, name, get them to spell it 5 times.

its the same with these research people. I always ask them if they are chargeing their clients, I then advise them that my charge out rate is $250 per 1/4 hour and to whom should I send the bill to. It's amazing how quickly the phone goes dead.

I get the annoying phone companies ring up regularly, when the ask to speak to the person who handles our phone accounts I tell them he's at a different office but was complaining about his phone bill the other day, I then tell them his name is John Howard and to call him on this no. 02 6277 7111
Because they are always overseas call centres and don't twig im sure they have a interesting conversation when the call

2 methods I use.
1. Normally the answering machine is on, screening calls. They NEVER leave a message and rarely call back.
2. In the event that you do actually answer before the machine, just say to the caller,
"Just hang on a sec, need to take the pot of the stove"
Then just put the phone down and leave it for a while. Eventually they'll hang up.

I'm with you. I screen all my calls now, and I have even added "if you have called from a list, please remove me from it". and they don't leave messages.
Friends and family know to chat to the machine for a while until I get a chance to pick up!
Its all a bit sad isn't it?

If it was a free $800 holiday, why not take it.. chances of it not being totally free are about 99%..
did you ask what the catch was?

The catch is you have to purchase breakfast and dinner at the hotel, and you have to spend a minimum amount on each per person.
If you go usually goon holidays in hotels and eat at your hotel then it's a saving, but when you
camp and just
cook your owns meals, it's still an expensive holiday.
Me, give me a breakfast cooked over a
camp fire, and a dinner out of a
camp oven and I'm happy!!

There is a do not call list - I think the DIrect Marketing Association uses it.
Problem is, 80% of the people that call are not members.....

But this is only for companies that adhere to their policies.
Biggest PITA is that smaller local companies are exempt from the federal legislation (up to 30 staff), so they use the "divide and conquor",technique, splitting their companies when they get too big, thereby keeping themselves "legal".
Go to you phone provider and have the access terminated to overseas calls. Most call centers are located in India, or have their local phone services routed through similar systems to Skype (VoIP) and end up going OS before they return to AUS. Blocking international access stops these in their tracks.
Using you mobile for any OS calls doesn't cost that much more.

Due to our great telecommunication companys our phone has become a virtual "unlisted " number , after what seems like 100.000 complaints our phone is still listed under the swimbos maiden name [16yrs worth of complaints to the telecos] ,, so an unsolicited call is easy to pick ,
phone rings ,give number , "is ms ______ at home " sorry dosnt exist ,"is mr_____ there" sorry never existed , play them like a fish , soon they get the message that YOU have just wasted THEIR time ,,, = $

Yes but 'they' get paid for wasting your time, its just a job over there in India I believe.
what I would like is a facility on my phone that automatically charges 'them' a tidy sum as soon as I press a button after answering the phone for any unsolicited call to my number.

Nice idea, but not possible. Our Telecommunication act prohibits that sort of thing It does work both ways, that's why you cant be spammed on SMS (unless from Telstra et al at no charge to the user).

Was telling my grandmother yesterday about the phone call. Hers is better.
She got a call from one of those buy a booklet of vouchers for $99 and the vouchers will save you hundreds.
She told them she wasn't interested, the said there are heaps of stuff for cars perhaps your husband would be interested could they speak to him.
She said
"Certainly but he's not here, you can speak to him at plot 29 at the cemetery, there's no phone, and you'll have to speak up."
My grandmother is 86 and I thought this was a corker!!!
