Hi Rick. On the question of how much to save for the trip, how's this idea.

Go to your state library and look at all the country's local newspapers. Get an idea of what industries each one supports and reports on. Plot these on a map and plan your trip around oz by booking up a little work along the way by placing adverts. For example, you and partner might do two weeks of fruit picking in the riverland of SA to fund 3 weeks along the Great Ocean Road. Then you might have someone at Dubbo base hospital who needs a gardener for three days. If you let the ads know what you can do (or are willing to have a go at), who knows where it could take you. Advertise that you will be,say in the Gossford area for the first half of march, and see what happens. Get the idea?. Rus.

Have a look at the "Workabout" web site. It will give an idea of what work is where.
As for cost about $100 per day when traveling for fuel, food & camping fees.
Enjoy

Even though its dearer at the moment I'd still go for a diesel. We've covered a fair part of Australia in our 4 Runner and its handled it with ease.I'd fit a snorkel first thing and then add whatever else you think you need.

any diesel vehicle is better than a tojo 4runner
there are better vehicles that cost much less to run with more reliable engines

If you are not studying (Uni, Tafe Etc) to help save for your trip you could consider Trying to get a job as a T/A on a mine site up north (Goldfields/ Pilbara) region, you would save enough money for the trip in 6 months and have some left over to deck the car out, the girlfriend might not be to happy about it but.

You will have one kick ass trip thou, most people don’t get round to something like this till retirement, I am 21 and would like to do something like that but between work and trying to get time off at the same time as my friend’s can it’s hard enough to organise a 5 day trip.

Nick, you have just rekindled my hate for work, Shi* I wish I were 19 again in fact no 18.

Oh year for the type of vehicle and driving you will be doing I would go the Diesel.

MAAATE. I too wish I was 18 again but I wouldn't be thinkin about a trip around OZ. I'd be puttin on some threads, combing my hair (I can still remember having hair) and going straight to the closest pub or club.

DAMN, the girlies in my day didn't dress like they do now.

LOL.

You could still head for the nearest pub, It probably just a matter of convincing SWMBO that it is a work thing and you will be fired if you do not attend.

I friend’s dad recently had his high school reunion and after him and all his mates went out to Club Bay View. I would have loved to have been there a bunch of drunk blokes aged 45+ in that place would have been hilarious.

Just remember you are only as old as you want to be.

Hi Rick,
My boyfriend and I are 25 and are leaving on Monday to go on a trip around OZ for 12 months. We have been saving for 2 years as we want this to be more of a holiday than a working holiday...In the past year we have bought a new Holden Rodeo Diesel and have set it up to tour...

How much you should save depends on how much do you want to work?? We are leaving from Sydney and don't intend to work until we went to Perth, therefore we have saved more than $10K.

You also need to think about any $$$ commitments you may have like mobile phone bills, loans and in our case we have a mortgage that needs to be covered.

How much do want to get out of the trip? We intend to do and see everything we want including sky diving, swimming with the whale sharks in WA and bumming around for weeks on end. Set your saving goal quite high and try as hard as you can to acheive it. Good luck!

With the cost of diesel and petrol you may want to look at LPG.

Sure, someone will be real quick to jump in and say you can't get LPG everywhere. If you can get it 70 or 80% of the places you intend to go, you'll still be way in front. You'll also have the extra power.

Not sure where you live, but at the moment petrol and diesel are between $1.20 and $1.30 a litre in Melbourne, LPG is 39 cents. I'm guessing with the kind of trip you're planning you'll use about 100 litres per week. That's a saving of $85 (if you're comparing to petrol) or $60 a week against diesel. That changes your budget immensely.
