My wife Jenny works some weekends in a local camping store in Sydney. Last night she came home with a neat LED upgrade for one of our numerous AA MiniMaglites kicking around the house. From the manufacturer's claims - a set of AA's will run it for 20 continuous hours or so. That's pretty good in my books. The thing that got me was the amount of light it put our - far more than the original bulb.

Just to make it perfectly clear - we do not represent this company, but though that this device might suit a lot of people here.

They're British made and are imported by Sheldon & Hammond as well as Zen. Just fiddling with ours last night - and am really impressed by how bright they are. They are called NiteIze and the website is here:

Got it and its great. The only problem is it replaces the battery cap with a push button on/off switch. Put it in a bag and it is likely to turn itself on. So apart from that for $18 (I bought it for it is amazing.)

though a not so excellent story is the camping LED light I bought from the LED shop. Sure its only got 3w consumption off 12v but for the configuration and $35 price i was hoping for something a lot brighter. see http://www.ledshoponline.com/automotive_leds1156.htm#camping

porl - you don't need to install the cap switch. It's just an extra. Also - so that you don't accidently turn it on, just twist the reflector end to the "off" position like you normally would on a MiniMaglite.

Go to Dick Smith, Tandy etc and buy an LED in the colour of your choice to suit voltage. Trim legs and install with correct polarity and bobs your uncle.

Costs about $2 and I have done it numerous times with great success. Good luck and remember polarity!

No where near as bright. This upgrade ahs 3 LEDS - and they are the high intensity type. They are way too bright to look at with the torch facing you directly. Normal LEDS are a soft glow in comparison.

actually now i've been the website that is a different kit to the one we installed. So the dumb question - with the kit above do you get a splashing out light or a narrow beam ?

It's a bit of both.... the beam isn't as adjustable as it is with the normal bulb. It's still a good solid white light even though it spreads a little.

Hi, I checked out the website also. Looks great. When you get to order from their website they cost US$9 each but when you get to their checkout they use a delivery that cost US$32 for two Led's ... no way ! !

Where are they available locally , by that I mean Australia ??

The guys I work with get these for about 10 - 12 dollars from JayCar electronics around Sydney , maybe you could try looking to order online, 3 LED replacement for reflector and bulb.
