We are considering the purchase of an Offroad Jayco (Freedom Outback) or Coromal Pop-Top (Corvair) Caravan. Can anyone please share their experiences with either van.

We had actually decided on a Coromal Pioneer Silhouette after reading the good things about them but are now considering the upgrade to a van if it can tackle similar conditions.

Dan, I saw one of the Jaycos beside the road at Oodnadatta last year and I understand it was there for a little while :-0

No, I don't have a van or sell anything either for that matter in that line...

hi! we have a jayco outback freedom and used to own a jayco offroad campervan I personally would not go back to a camper as i love just being able to stop pop the top and your ready to enjoy we do dirt roads and go across dirt tracks to get to places we did drive ours into kingfisher camp with no problems but like everything a lot depends on how you drive if you drive to conditions we find it fine then again we did not take it to the cape and in reality would not take any caravan to the cape. I hope you enjoy whatever you choose just go with your choice and we would all own a kedron or trackmaster but some of us just dont have the finances whatever you choose just try to use it and not let it sit in the shed not being used barb

Hi danielm,

We have a Coromal off road pop top which we have taken everywhere and, apart from a bit of red dust in a couple of cupboards, it performed excellently. We went to Cape York last year and, although we didn't tow to the top, it handled what we did with no effort at all including the road to Lawn Hill National Park, Kingfisher Camp, the Birdsville Track, the Strezleki, Innamincka and Cullyamurra Waterhole and the Oodnadatta track. We pulled it through water, over corrugations which shook the car to pieces, through sand and over rocks.

Would you believe the only damage it sustained was when we stopped in a caravan park at Foster on the way back and a branch fell off a tree and pierced the pop top!!

I can only recommend the van I know - I know nothing about the Jayco.

would never consider a camper again
walk in caravan pop the top everything ready
when it rains camper is lousy
we use our caravan offroad and gravel roads a lot
never had an issues and drive to the conditions
carry air compressor so we can let the tyres down and pump back up on bitumen

We have a Jayco Outback Expanda and it's a beauty. We've done the Great Central Road from Laverton to Uluru, the Oodnadatta Track, the Norseman - Hyden road, the Gawler Ranges in South Oz and it hasn't missed a beat. We had a Coromal Magnum (read off-road) 440 and it was also good. The only disadvantage with the van is the height can bite you on the bum sometimes if you don't keep an eye on all the trees crossing the track or campsite but the advantage of stopping and eating inside in comfort whenever you want is well worth the burden of extra towing resistance, for my family at least. The beauty of the expanda is that the 16 foot of van space isn't eaten into by any beds. They fold out the end when required. Go for it.

Met a well known personality in the caravanning travel industry recently towing an Expanda - doing some pretty serious dirt road stuff. When asked "how does it stand up?" he replied with a grin "you need to be 'expert level' with a screw gun"

We do it easy and in comfort towing a Bushtracker.
