We're planning to head west from
Sydney in a few weeks to visit Mungo NP for a few days and then meander up the Darling through Pooncarrie to
Menindee for a few more days before coming home via the Dish at
Parkes. Would appreciate any info anyone can offer to help us plan our time. In particular, does it get crowded at Mungo in the Sept school hols? which of the
camping areas do you reckon is best? any good spots on the way north along the Darling? best
camping around
Menindee? must see's and do's? thinking of taking the kayak with us - good idea or bad?
any input gratefully appreciated

Mungo never gets crowded so you should be OK even during the school hols. There are two
camping areas, one near the Lodge and one inside the NP, along
the loop road. Both are fine though the one inside the
park is the more popular.
You won't regret going to Mungo it's magical. Though I'm not sure about the kayak, the lake's been dry for tens of thousands of years :-)

Hi Ken
We were up at
Menindee a week ago. The two big lakes (Lake Cawndilla and
Menindee Lake) are dry.
Pamamaroo Lake,Lake Tandure and Tandure Lake all still ok.
There was plenty of good campsites on the waters edge, along the road that follows the southern edge of
Lake Pamamaroo. If you follow this road to where
Pamamaroo Lake and Lake Tandure meet and the
Darling River leaves the lakes, there is a
large camp area with
toilets (Boure and Wills
Camp Area).
There are also plenty of good, numbered campsites along the Darling, south west of
Menindee in the
Kinchega National Park, there is a fee and you may have to book ?. I suggest you call at the
tourist info centre at
Menindee, they were very friendly and helpful, they also have good "mud" maps of the area.
Enjoy your holiday !
Regards
Neil

G'day Ken,
don't know of any good
camping spots between
Pooncarie and
Menindee, but at
Menindee as has been suggested, plenty of good spots along the river in Kinchega or the Burke and Wills
campsite area near Pamarmaroo.
Just keep in mind most of the wind comes from roughly southwest, so don't
camp close to the road on the upwind side unless you love washing and cleaning the dust from the passing traffic.

Ken,
We just got back from Mungo - it was great.
We were the last out of
the loop road - they had already closed the road.
due to rain.
Also, get ready for flies....flies...flies.
Belah
camp on
the loop road was quiet.
Have a great time - we did.

Thanks zedjay for the follow up - do you know if the Belah
Camp is suitable for camper trailers?
We're leaving in a couple of days and looking forward to getting out there

ken,
sorry - don't know anything about campertrailers, but our campervan was fine.
The road is pretty good - only a few tight bends near the lunette.
It only sprinkled light rain - and the clay road turned slippery surprisingly quickly and we were at a snails crawl slipping and sliding by the end.
It was a great experience . say hi to the cheeky apostle birds at Belah
camp.
best wishes
zj
