Installing a roof mounted aircon to a camper?

We have a small Goldstream 'off road' camper. Has anyone had experience installing on of those roof mounted caravan type airconditioners to a camper? I believe it can be done with the use of a metal bracket accross the roof to support the weight. As this particular camper does not have much cupboard space inside , installing a split type A/C would not be possible. We have also considered a 3/4 HP wall rattler but there is the problem of storage and fitting each time you make camp.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I would be concerned about the weight on the roof.

Can you get a Boat Rack option for your camper ?

Does it have to be removed to put the Lid up ?

If you CAN get the option , and you DONT have to take it off , you will probably be OK.

Wiring would be the only other problem ?

Hi Flappa
Weight concerns me too but camper already has a boatrack fitted to the roof lid which winds up with the roof. So manufacturer must believe it can carry the load. As we do not carry a boat, the weight of the A/c should not be too much of a problem?

If in fact it can be fitted, other concerns would be dust and vibration.

Then I think that part is solved.

I cant see it being any worse then on any other vehicle/van.

All up to the Installation. Dust cover maybe , for the unit when travelling ?

Why not stay at home then you can have an AC on whenever you like.

I cannot believe the amount of Crap that some of you people carry away. Mega fridges, Air con, DVD Video, Laptop, mobile internet, GPS, Sat phone, showers etc........

Some of you people have forgotten what a holiday is all about. Get away from all that everyday stuff and actually get interactive with our environment.

You may as well stay at home and watch a documentory of Australian bush. I reckon that you would experience more watching TV than acually going out in your mobile offices.

What has society come to??????

The question was . . . Can he do it.

NOT , should he do it.

Dont like it fine , DONT answer , or better still take a hike in your 1970's 4wd , with no air con , 4 speed fuel guzzling beast.

Enjoy your paper maps.

Hey Flappa you funny little man. You must be pretty bored since dwarf throwing has been banned in Australia. How do you earn your money now???

Hey pal in the 70's I did use a 70's model car with a 4 speed and no air con. This was when fuel was 20 cents per litre. Guess what??? I actually made it across deserts, Kimberly, Cape York, and the only modern thing that we had was a 6 channell lunch box codan with a magnesium battery and a long wire for an antenna. Guess what else??? We actually made it without needing to "report in" to anyone. Had a ball. Experienced the bush, experienced friendship and communication between ourselves, the few travellers and aboriginals that we met along the way. Even met Mike and Mal Leyland in their Landy's.

You can do all that with modern cars but you do not need all of the other crap that you take along. I saw a Discovery on the Simpson a few weeks ago at a waterhole and the kids did not want to get out of the car as they were more interested in watching a DVD. The parents took a few photos out of the windows and droive on. They had a screen in the front for mum and dad and one hanging from the roof for the kids.

I ask you why the hell go if you are taking a portable version of everthing from the home and orofice?????

I see once again we have people with no constructive comment voicing there oponions, if you don't have any thing worth while to say keep your peace and move on.
We do not know why the question was asked, is the a/c needed because of a health issue and by fitting an a/c could they then be able to travel to places that would otherwise not be able to go.
Or any other reason for that matter, it is a question that has been asked in good faith, if you can't give constructive advice leave the post and move on.

May as well hook up a portable iron lung and take granny with you in a trailer too. While you are there put Trucksters wheelchair on the roof and take the dialasis machine.

Just think you could take Sam Newman and Michael Jackson with you if you could get a plastic surgeon to come along and keep their faces from melting off.

I could take a portable morgue so as Nana could make it.

Why dont we just pick up Melbourne and put it down in the Kimberly or Sydney in WA. That way everyone could experience it by looking out of their loungeroom windows. Then we could go to where the citys were and see some bush.

See You,

There happens to be a contributor on this forum who took away a large bank of batteries, microwave, fridges etc. Why? Because his wife was suffering kidney failure and he needed all this to run her dialysis (learn to spell it if you're going to make insults about it) equipment. He made the effort to allow her to enjoy the life some of us take for granted.

Get it. Going bush is not the preserve of the fit and healthy only.

Your insensitive comments are not well received.

Think before you write.

Jim.

Sarg,

You've now been demoted to Lance Corporal, and I'm being generous.

If you're really a Sarg, don't you believe in fighting for democracy and choice? Or do you believe that it is up to one supreme mind to dictate to everyone else how they should behave.

Ever heard of Hitler?

Well Sarg, it is not hard to see why you agree with that other blowhard Seeyou, what sort of sign on name is Sarg, some sort of monilker you gave yourself to raise your low self asteem. As posted earlier if you dont have anything constructive to say join Seeyou and move on, nobody is interested in your ramblings.

"Dumbo and Wank".

That's amazing stuff.

Did you think it up by yourself or do you have a scriptwriter?

I am amazed at your wit. Well at least 50% of it.

I know plenty of blokes whos wifes would NOT ever go camping with them if they didn't have a caravan. Once over the threshold, many of these wives have found that they love the bush and gradually start to leave the luxuries behind once they know they can live without them.

Some people just aren't born in the bush..... but come to love it anyway :) Vans just ease the transition for some.

most wall rattlers as you put it are very light these days and dont rattle

the roof top units are only a fan coil ...they need a compressor and piping from the engine...thats why they are on a tractor or similar other arrangement...

They also make roof top units using the evporative cooler principle, but i assume you want refrigerated cos you have considered wall and split types.

To the forumites who were constructive I thank you. To 'See You' and 'Sarg' what can I say . Others here have summed it up for me.
I should'nt need to explain my position to you both but I will - if you are at all interested. My wife and I are almost retired and have spent the last 25 odd years bush camping in tents as you do with basic creature comforts - no problem. We have also extensively sailed the north coast of Aus and overseas in our yacht and still do. We have lived in the tropics for 30+ years but the heat is starting to get to my wife. We have now progressed to an of road camper (tent on wheels) and as we wish to spend most of out time in the tropical north an aircon for sleeping on hot nights will allow us to continue our active life. I dare say that we have interacted with nature over the years a great deal more than you two would realise.

John,

Don't you get it?

You need to adhere the advice of See You and Sarg.

True camping is supposed to be a poverty stricken test of one's self endurance. Enjoying yourself is restricted to living like Burke and Wills.

To really enjoy yourself you need to lose the car and camper. Treck through the bush with camels and salted meat. Dig for your water. Fighting scurvy is a genuine bonus of "true" camping. A packet of matches is considered a luxury.

I'm all for every comfort that makes camping like home.

Have you considered one of those portable room aircons (not evaporative, they are useless in humid weather)? Delonghi and others make them. Possibly store it in the camper when not in use. No idea if it would work but just a suggestion.

Cheers,

Jim.

JohnWD,

Do and take whatever you think is necessary to enable you to enjoy this great country.

Always find good ideas from posts on this forum although sometimes you have to dig a bit (and avoid the flying clods as well) :)
