I have started to get a whine from the turbo on my Jackaroo TD2000. I have done 130,000 KM. Does this mean it's stuffed and if so, can it be repaired?
Would appreciate suggestions for repairers.

g'day dave,
i have done a lot of research on turbos over the last few months and have found that if you have a whine in your turbo it means that the impellas or shaft are out balance probably from wear or bearing /bush failure.might need to get aturbo spec
to check it out
hope this helps

As has been said increased noise can be a
sign of wear but not necesarily impending failure. I have a petrol Volvo with a factory turbo motor, the PO had a new turbo fitted at 180k, I've now done 390k and it is still going strong, under bonnet temps on a petrol turbo are way higher than a diesel too. It does whine especially when cold but unless there is a scraping noise (due to blades hitting the housing) it will go for a long while without any probs.

Gidday David
Couple of things about turbos.
When does it whine?
Whineing from a turbo could be because the bearings are worn out which causes the impellor to rub against the intake housing. All turbos have a thrust bearing in them which stops the end float which is the amount of end to end movement that is present. Easy way to check them is to remove the intake and give the shaft a spin while pulling it against the bearings. If it hits or rubs on anything you will hear it. then its time for an overhaul.
Loose clamps on the induction can also make some strange noises which can sound like a whine. This mainly happens when the engine is under load, like going up hills etc.
They are repairable. Don't know what it will cost you but you are looking at approx 4hrs labour charge to start with.
Where to go? There is a company called "Dymanic Tubrocharger Services" or used to be called that a few years ao. They are in
Brisbane,
Sydney and
Melbourne. Not sure if they are anywhere else but these guys have been doing up turbos for years on all sorts of engines. They have a good history and are also import agents for alot of the common brands of turbos.
Hope this helps
