I am about to part with the hard earned so is the new TX6200 any good?

Any feed back welcome.

We dont hike a lot BUT would feel safer with it in the packpack just in case. We are getting an 406 epirb as well but ...

And while im at it ... where is a good cheap place to buy in Melbourne?

Thanks

Helon

The TX6200 is definitely a good choice for a 5 watt Hand held CB Radio.
As a comparison, check your price against that available from Prestige Communications

I have ordered over the Net from them (based in Perth, WA) and their price is good and delivery quick.

A word of advice re the EPIRB. Don't buy the 402 device yet. The price is ridiculous at present and they are bulky.
The existing analogue (125.5 MHz) units are more cost effective and are good until 1997, by which time supply and demand for the 402 MHz digital units will bring them down to a more affordable price and a more compact design.
Manufacturers will also have "trade-up" specials whereby you can save money by returning the "old" analogue unit for a saving on the new one (prob. in order of $100)

Prestige also have some good prices on the analogue units, either the GME MT310, or the KTi RB3S. the KTi is also available without a beacon. ( KTi RB3 - which I currently have)

I don't have any association with Prestige (other than as a customer) but hate to see people "waste" money.

The existing 402 devices are NOT compact and unless you are going to mount them permanently in a boat, or 4WD, are IMHO not worth the investment at present.

> "good until 1997?"

You mean 2009 I hope

We can get a pocket epirb for $290 and maybe (fingers crossed) they extend the period out for a few more years. Do you think there's any chance of that?

Thanks for your reply.

Helen.

Duh! Where did I get 1997 from? Shot my intelligent reply to bits didn't it?

I suspect the older technology will still be supported past the February 2009 time frame for an indeterminate period.

A pocket epirb for $290??? for the 402MHz digital frequency???
WHERE???

OK. That looks about par for the course.

As a matter of fact the KTi RB3 is also available from the ExplorOz shop for $295.85 or the RB3S with Strobe for $323.06.

The best price I have seen so far for the 406MHz digital is from Marine Wholesalers who feature an ACR GlobalFix 406 MHZ EPIRB CAT II for $846 with a built in GPS (making them more accurate) or the same unit minus the GPS for $538.

Safety is important but I still think they are over priced at the moment.

Just as a matter of interest, I understand that good old Aussie intervention on the 406 digital standard has seen a significant reduction in previous prices of these units due to the re-classification recently introduced.
The original standards determined automatic deployment when submerged in water making the manufacturing costs higher.
But now with the CAT II units which are manually deployed (much more practical in non-marine environments) the price has come down a fair bit. (just not enough for me to upgrade yet though)

Actually, the 6200 and 7200 share identical technology. 6200 is UHF CB only, 7200 is a commercial radio that can also have UHF CB channels programmed.
Both are very well made units. We have sold HEAPS of the 6200 as well as lots of 7200's being rented at the moment on private frequencies...

will match the price from prestige and beat it by 10%. Just take down a print out of their price.

Well call me old fashioned but I have a 6200 and actually prefer my older uniden 0.5w unit, clearer, smaller, lighter but not 5w :( I like the 6200 tho, and chose it over the Icom due to selcall and ease to program additional channels from the keypad.
